The most important of these rules is that the Zarude tribe living there must never associate with humans. Ten years before the main events of the story, a lone Zarude discovers a human infant abandoned in a cradle washed up on a riverbank. Unable to leave the child to die, the Zarude defies the tribe's decree, leaves the flock, and raises the baby as its own son, naming him Koko. The manga follows Koko's childhood as he grows up believing himself to be a Pokémon, learning to swing through the trees, communicate with wild Pokémon, and live in harmony with the jungle under the protective care of the Zarude who has become his parent. Koko remains entirely isolated from the human world, unaware of his true origins.
