Since losing his most beloved son, Ronny, Brian Dawson has spent his days in emotional and spiritual apathy. A man in his early forties from Augusta, Maine, he was once warm, dutiful, and philanthropic, but the loss has stripped him of his job and his marriage, leaving him adrift. He is haunted by recurring nightmares in which a mysterious woman appears.

One day, Brian meets Lindsay Crystal, a college student majoring in folklore who has come to Augusta to research Silent Hill, a town she has heard described as a place where the dead return. Lindsay is earnest and mature, with a quiet brightness overshadowed by a deep sadness. She looks exactly like the woman from Brian’s nightmares. Intrigued and drawn by an inexplicable pull, Brian agrees to accompany her to Silent Hill. Unbeknownst to him, his deceased father originally came from that town, a fact that will prove significant as the journey unfolds.
