Makai Tenshō: Beato no Kōshin, also known as Makai Tenshō: Seija no Kōshin in Japanese, is a manga adaptation of the classic historical fantasy novel Makai Tenshō by Futaroh Yamada, with art by Naoko Kugo. Set in the early Tokugawa shogunate, the story follows the aftermath of the failed Shimabara Rebellion. The dark sorcerer Mori Sōiken uses the forbidden ninpou magic known as Makai Tenshō, or Demonic Resurrection, to bring the executed Christian rebel leader Amakusa Shirō Tokisada back from the dead. Sōiken then proceeds to resurrect other legendary historical figures as his undead warriors, including the famed swordsman Miyamoto Musashi, in order to overthrow the shogunate. Opposing them is the one-eyed swordsman Yagyū Jūbei Mitsuyoshi, who was originally intended to be the crown of the undead army but breaks free from Sōiken's control and sets out to stop the rebellion. The roster of resurrected warriors in this adaptation typically includes figures such as Amakusa, Musashi, Yagyū Munenori, and Hōzōin Inshun, among others. The narrative weaves together supernatural horror, samurai action, and political intrigue as Jūbei battles against the resurrected legends to prevent the demonic forces from plunging Japan into chaos. Unlike some other versions of the story, this manga adaptation tends to cast Amakusa as the primary villain mastermind rather than Sōiken. The art by Naoko Kugo brings the historical setting and grotesque demonic elements to life, emphasizing both the grim atmosphere of the era and the brutal violence of the conflicts.
