Four months after the end of a devastating war, in a forest still scarred by conflict, two lost souls cross paths at the beginning of winter. Mieli is a former child soldier who has known only the battlefield, raised as little more than military equipment. Kiryashka is a veteran who has lost her homeland and carries the weight of a past as a legendary sniper known as the White Falcon. With nowhere else to go, they begin living together in a small house deep in the snowy woods, quietly holding on to each other as they wait for the thaw.

The story follows their quiet, resilient struggle to build a life in the aftermath of war. Kiryashka takes Mieli in, promising to look after him until he becomes an adult, and he slowly learns what it means to live as a person rather than a weapon. The setting is the fictional land of Suomi, a country of forests and lakes that was swallowed by the war, and the narrative moves through the changing seasons as the two grow closer.

Early on, Mieli begins attending school and makes his first friend, a boy named Yuhani. But this fragile peace is threatened when Yuhani is revealed to be a spy for the Federation, a power still eyeing Suomi. Around the same time, a blizzard brings a former wartime comrade of Kiryashka named Rutsie to their door, forcing both Mieli and Kiryashka to confront the past they thought they had left behind. As the brief peace unravels, the two are pushed toward a crossroads where the bond they have built is tested by the lingering shadows of war.
