Born as a tanuki with the ability to transform into a human-like form, Totto is a shapeshifting beast called a kemono. Because his powers set him apart, his own family abandons him. Despite this lonely start, Totto harbors a simple dream: to use his human disguise to eat an ice cream that has never fallen on the ground. To achieve that goal, he makes his way to a hotel at the foot of the mountain called Hotel Morinoura and decides to work there. His closest companion is Awo, a serozu who watches over him with quiet support.

At the hotel, Totto meets other shapeshifting employees: Rora, a wolf, and Hanze, a cat, both of whom also possess transformation abilities. A human girl named Memi joins the group as well, carrying her own trauma—she claims that shapeshifting beasts killed her parents. Each of these coworkers arrives with their own burdens and reasons for working at the hotel. As Totto interacts with them, his earnest, small-scale dream and gentle persistence begin to stir changes in their hearts, gradually unraveling their personal conflicts and forcing them to confront their prejudices and fears.

The story follows Totto as he takes one small step after another toward his oddly humble but deeply meaningful ambition. Along the way, the bonds between the staff members deepen, and the hotel becomes a stage where the boundaries between beast and human blur, revealing the warmth and pain that exist on both sides. The narrative arc spans the slow, tender transformation of the characters as they learn to trust one another, with Totto’s unyielding optimism acting as the quiet catalyst for their emotional growth.
