In the early Showa period, a young girl named Shikimi is born with a Satori, a mononoke that clings to her and grants her the ability to read the minds of those around her. When her emotions run high, her body twists into a monstrous form, causing the villagers to fear and shun her as a demon. Her quiet life with her mother is shattered when a man-eating mononoke attacks, robbing her of the only person who accepted her. Carrying her mother’s final wish that she live in a wider world, Shikimi leaves her mountain village in the company of Ogata Asagi, the exorcist who avenged her mother’s death.

Ogata brings her to Tokyo, where they join a trouble-solving agency called Senzankou. There, Shikimi uses her mind‑reading ability to help Ogata confront a series of bizarre incidents tied to mononoke. As she adapts to city life, she slowly builds a found family that includes the mononoke Doudomeki and a bakeneko. She also learns the harsh truth behind Ogata’s hatred of mononoke: a werewolf once slaughtered his family, and that same creature may still be active. Over the course of their investigations, Shikimi and Ogata grow to trust each other, and Shikimi begins to search for her own identity—neither fully human nor fully mononoke. An encounter with a shape‑shifting fox leads the pair back onto the trail of the werewolf, forcing them to confront the past and decide what they truly are to each other.
