Manga
Description
In modern Tokyo, a city that promised everything yet delivers nothing, a collection of adults drift through their days like migratory fish, unable to stop moving for fear their hearts will die. The manga unfolds as a series of interconnected short stories, a roundelay of lives that brush against one another within the competitive publishing industry and beyond. Each chapter follows a different protagonist—a jaded editor, a working mother struggling against office indifference, a lonely salaryman from the ice-age generation desperate for validation, a young woman who fled a repressive hometown only to find the capital equally suffocating—all of them haunted by the dreams they once held and the paths they lost. The narrative refuses easy catharsis; minor victories feel provisional, and genuine connection remains tantalizingly out of reach. The workplace itself becomes a character, a system that grinds down ambition and replaces it with the grim momentum of mere survival. Characters try to find meaning in small rebellions, in fleeting kindnesses, in the refusal to stop swimming, even when they have long forgotten what they were swimming toward. The tone is brutally unsentimental, but a thread of dark, rueful empathy runs through every episode, as if the manga is asking not for pity but for recognition: this is what it looks like to be an adult in the Reiwa era, drowning in plain sight.
