Description
After being worked to the bone at an exploitative black company in his previous life, Sojiro dies and is granted reincarnation into another world by a goddess. His only wish is to never again eat tasteless meals and to live a quiet, peaceful life in the countryside. The goddess grants his request, but not in the way he imagined – she drops him into a perilous forest known as the Demon Realm, armed with nothing more than a single knife. That knife, however, turns out to be a divine tool called Craft Gear. It can process and shape almost any material with ease, turning Sojiro’s hobby of making things into a life-saving and life-building skill. Using Craft Gear, he constructs a shelter, digs a well, fashions a proper bed, and gradually equips a fully functional home, proving that even a cursed wilderness can become a comfortable place to live. His creations range from practical necessities to clever gadgets, and he soon discovers that Craft Gear is more than just a crafting tool – it is also lethally effective against the magical beasts that prowl the forest.
As Sojiro settles in, his solitary life begins to change. He befriends a cute ghost-like spirit beast that takes up residence with him, and an elf named Mistia becomes his neighbor, bringing both companionship and a connection to the wider world of the forest. The elf is straightforward and athletic, yet shows an unexpectedly bashful side, and her presence introduces a layer of social dynamics to the otherwise secluded life. Other characters include a high school girl named Chigusa Ichiono, who is endearingly clumsy and adds comic relief, and later a small but highly capable fairy. The community grows, and the monster-filled forest that once seemed like a punishment becomes the backdrop for a fulfilling second life.
The narrative unfolds through several key arcs. The early chapters focus on survival and basic establishment: building a home, securing food, and learning to harness Craft Gear’s full potential. As his base becomes more comfortable, the story shifts toward interactions with the elf and other forest dwellers, including a pack of fluffy wolf-like creatures that become loyal companions. Around the second volume, a dark mage appears, threatening the hard-won peace – but the threat quickly turns comedic when the dark mage is revealed to be a bumbling ditz rather than a true villain. In a later arc, Mistia returns home covered in blood, having found a legendary dragon, and brings the creature to Sojiro’s settlement, adding a powerful and mischievous new presence to the group. Another arc introduces a group of tiny, industrious fairies who further expand the community and offer their own brand of help and trouble. Through all of this, Sojiro continues to craft, improve everyone’s quality of life, and occasionally remark that his divine workshop might be a bit too overpowered, but he is determined to enjoy the second chance he has been given. The story is a slow-paced, low-stress tale of rebuilding, crafting, and forging unexpected bonds in the corner of a fantastical world.
