Alto, a young man living in extreme poverty with his younger sister Ruru, is approached one day by a mysterious golden deity who offers him a lucrative job: exorcising妖怪 (yokai) for money. Desperate to escape their financial struggles, Alto accepts and begins a new life as a part-time yokai exterminator, battling supernatural creatures in exchange for cash. The series blends action and comedy as Alto learns to fight increasingly dangerous spirits while trying to protect his sister.

The story unfolds across five volumes. After establishing the premise, a major arc begins when a dangerous yokai known as the nurari soul enters Ruru’s body. To save her, Alto must defeat one hundred yokai in a massive event called the Hyakki Yakō, with a reward of ten million yen. This battle introduces the nurari jūkyō, an elite group of ten powerful yokai who serve as the primary antagonists. In later volumes, Ruru is kidnapped by the nurari jūkyō to be used as a sacrifice to revive their master, Nurarihyon. Alto and his allies infiltrate the enemy stronghold for a final confrontation with the leader, Hyakume. The story culminates in a final battle involving all the main characters, leading to a decisive conclusion. The cast includes Alto’s determined sister Ruru, the enigmatic gold god who set him on this path, and a rotating cast of yokai allies and enemies. The setting is a modern Japanese town overlaid with a hidden world of spirits, where the stakes are both personal and supernatural.
