Mankichi Akatsuki is a salaryman at a publicly traded IT company, successful at work and in his personal relationships, but his home life is anything but ordinary. Every other member of his household—his mother, his older sister, and his two younger sisters—is unemployed. Despite their good intentions and genuine desire to work, they all struggle to hold down a job for various reasons. The situation becomes even more complicated when his childhood friend Minayo loses her home and moves in with them. Now Mankichi finds himself the sole breadwinner for five women, each with her own quirky personality and unique obstacles. His personal goals are twofold: help every family member achieve true independence, and ultimately marry Minayo.

The story is set in contemporary Japan, in a modest family home where financial pressure and chaotic domestic life collide. The central conflict stems from the gap between Mankichi’s steady, ordinary work life and the absurd, jobless reality at home. His mother, Mio, is a charming but irresponsible woman who sometimes dates much younger men. His older sister, Yuriko, once lands a job at a major corporation but quickly discovers it is a black company that overworks its employees. One of his younger sisters, Isato, becomes a V-tuber who accidentally reveals her face online and goes viral. The other younger sister remains equally job‑prone to misfortune. Minayo, the childhood friend, adds romantic tension and additional household chaos.

Throughout the series, each family member’s struggle to find stable employment generates a series of comedic and sometimes heartfelt episodes. Mankichi repeatedly tries to nudge them toward self‑sufficiency, only to be pulled back into their money‑related misadventures.
