Decades ago, the emergence of superhuman abilities called Gifts gave rise to heroes who saved the world. Suou Kouki always dreamed of joining their ranks, but he was born without a Gift and spent his days in apathy. His childhood friend Sanada Hiro was accepted into the National Defense Force, the premier hero organization, deepening Kouki’s despair. While wallowing in self‑pity, he was attacked and killed by a Filth—a person who misuses his Gift. But instead of dying, Kouki awakened the ability Revive Hunter, which activates upon death and brings him back with amplified power. Determined to expose the Defense Force’s corruption and false justice, he chooses to operate outside the system. During his vigilante activities, he is abducted by Kiryu, the head of the vast criminal syndicate Black Dream. Kiryu’s shocking proposal leads Kouki to join the organization, becoming a member of the very group he once would have fought. Plagued by guilt after his first kill, he struggles with the morality of his path. The only person who eases his turmoil is a woman named Fuuka, but even a brief moment of peace is shattered when Black Dream members terrorize the area. His friend Hiro, now a Defense Force soldier, is cornered by the syndicate, and Kouki instinctively protects him—forcing him to confront the widening chasm between his past ideals and his present role as a dark hero on the road to becoming the final boss.
