Description
Six childhood friends grow up together in the remote mountain village of Muttsujimura, Kyoto. The four oldest among them vanish without explanation on the day they enter high school, leaving only Yuki Narutaki and Takaya Toribeno behind. One year later, the two are attacked by a mysterious black shadow. Their rescuer is Akira Mibu, one of the vanished four, who has transformed into a powerful fighter. He reveals the truth: the six of them are children of fate, born once every hundred years to seal the monstrous entities known as Gedō. Each of the six is linked to one of the six Buddhist paths of reincarnation. Akira embodies the Asura path (Shuradō); the remaining absent friends—Manato, Kureha, and Haruka—are tied to the paths of Hungry Ghosts, Beasts, and Humans respectively. Yuki is the Hell path (Jigokudō) and Takaya is the Heaven path (Tendō), the two central pillars who must work together to send the Gedō to their proper realm. The four older friends, having already awakened their powers, return one by one to begin their shared duty.

The story follows the six as they move into a traditional Kyoto townhouse, train their abilities, and confront the Gedō that plague the human world. The greatest threat is Kyoshuku, a massive tengu-like Gedō that has been sealed beneath the village for centuries. During an early battle, Kyoshuku infests Akira’s right arm, leaving him vulnerable to the entity’s influence. Meanwhile, Takaya forces his own awakening before his sixteenth birthday, driven by a selfish and womanizing personality that clashes constantly with Akira’s devotion to Yuki. Yuki herself harbors a quiet crush on Takaya, but Takaya’s heart lies with Haruka, the gentle shrine maiden of the Human path.

As Yuki’s sixteenth birthday approaches, her awakening proves different from the others. The power that emerges is not her own—it is the personality and memories of a woman named Yuki (or Snow), a marginalized villager from eight hundred years ago. This woman became the first sacrifice to seal Kyoshuku and now resides within Yuki, manifesting as a bold, arrogant, and seductive alternate self. Yuki struggles to coexist with this inner presence, and her relationships with Takaya and Akira grow increasingly complicated.

The narrative deepens when the group enters the cave beneath Muttsujimura, where Kyoshuku’s true body is imprisoned. There, Yuki relives the full history of the eight-hundred-year-old pact: a love story between the outcast woman Snow and the monk Shunryo, their forced separation, Shunryo’s self-sacrifice to protect the village, and Snow’s agreement to become the seal. The cycle repeats every century, and now a new sacrifice is required to reinforce the seal permanently. As the day of the fateful ceremony arrives, the six friends face an impossible choice. Yuki resolves to release Kyoshuku and become the new seal herself, but the others refuse to accept her martyrdom. The temporary barrier they create will hold for only a few minutes. Out of time, the six must decide together whether one of them will become the next sacrifice—or find another way to save the world without losing one of their own. The story concludes with their final decision, bringing the cycle of bondage and fate to a close, and settling the tangled loves and loyalties among them.
