In Tsurebito, there are no angels or gods of death. Instead, the souls of the deceased exist in an in-between world called the hazama, a liminal space where life and death barely intersect. Those who die but cannot pass through the gate to the afterlife because of lingering attachments are given a choice: become a Tsurebito, a guide who leads other wandering souls to the gate. This is the only way for them to remain in the hazama rather than vanish entirely. However, if a Tsurebito fails to guide someone to the gate within a set period, they lose their heart and degenerate into a Bakebito, a hollow drifting existence with nothing left.

The story begins with Mako, a teenage girl who dies suddenly in a traffic accident. She had only just become a couple with her childhood friend and longtime crush, Hayato. Unable to accept leaving him behind, Mako chooses to become a Tsurebito so she can stay near the world of the living and watch over him. She is taken under the wing of Aya Ookumo, an experienced and enigmatic master Tsurebito who has been guiding souls for a long time. Together they navigate the hazama, encountering a variety of lost souls, each burdened by their own regrets and unresolved emotions.

As Mako guides these spirits to their personal gates, her own attachment to Hayato grows stronger. But the more fiercely she clings to the living world, the more her body is stained by kuro, the color of death. Her presence in the world of the living begins to fade, and the boundary between her status as neither fully alive nor fully dead becomes painful. The story unfolds across several interconnected arcs, weaving together the fates of the spirits Mako helps and the slow, bittersweet unraveling of her relationship with Hayato. Other characters include Hayato himself, who struggles with grief and the strange sense that Mako is still near; Shuichi Sendou, a fellow Tsurebito with his own motives; and a series of transient souls whose stories reflect different faces of love, loss, and the fear of being forgotten.

The narrative balances supernatural horror with quiet, emotional moments, exploring what it means to hold on and what it takes to let go. Through Mako’s journey, the manga questions the nature of death, the weight of memory, and the possibility of finding peace even when trapped between two worlds.
