Description
In a world where those born with magical abilities are branded as sorcerers and despised by every other race, a young boy named Roan endures a life worse than slavery. Forced to perform as a spectacle in a traveling circus, he has known nothing but cruelty and exploitation. His fate changes when he meets Kito, a cantankerous elf who is also a sorcerer. Kito belongs to the Nightbells, a notorious vigilante group that operates outside the law to punish the wicked. After Roan is nearly sold to a wealthy patron eager to watch a sorcerer be dissected, Kito rescues him and introduces him to the Nightbells.
The story unfolds across a richly imagined fantasy world where elves, dragon-people, humans, and other races coexist in fragile and often hostile relations. Roan, who has only ever wished to be cherished by someone, finds in Kito and the Nightbells the first real bonds of his life. Together they embark on missions to root out corruption and confront a deeper conspiracy. The first major arc takes them to the floating dragon kingdom of Eddasult, where they search for a mysterious artifact known as the Reverse Box, the source of many evils. As they investigate, they uncover a shadowy plot involving the king and a hidden enemy.
As the story progresses, Roan learns more about Kito’s past and the true origins of the Nightbells. The organization was founded a century earlier by a human named Metheus, who dreamed of a future where sorcerers and other outcasts could live freely. Metheus obtained Pandora’s Box, an artifact said to grant any wish, and sought to use it to create peace, but a great war shattered that dream. The present-day conflict is revealed to be part of a long-running scheme orchestrated by the human race, a legacy of the species war that began a hundred years ago.
Ultimately, the narrative traces the intertwined fates of Roan and Kito as they confront the forces that have shaped their world. Roan’s journey from a helpless victim to a determined member of the Nightbells, and Kito’s struggle with the burdens of the past, drive a story about finding belonging in a world that rejects you. The most hated people become the ones tasked with saving the world, and the bonds forged in adversity prove stronger than any curse.
