Description
In the post-apocalyptic wasteland of the 1990s, where civilization has collapsed and ruthless gangs fight for survival, the legendary story of Hokuto no Ken is revisited through a bizarre and comedic lens. Hokuto no Ken: Barbecue Aji is a parody manga that takes iconic scenes from the first fifteen volumes of the original series and subjects them to a deliberately mangled English translation, written entirely in katakana Engrish. The gimmick is driven by Yushi Kawata, the scenario writer from the earlier parody series Hokuto no Ken: Ichigo Aji, who applies his self-proclaimed middle-school level English proficiency to produce hilariously inaccurate translations of the original dialogue and narration. Famous lines and special move names, such as those of the Hokuto Shinken martial art, are given absurd, phonetically spelled English approximations that sound almost but not quite right. The artwork is primarily composed of actual panels and character art taken from the original manga by Buronson and Tetsuo Hara, which are then reconstructed and paired with the new Engrish text. Newly drawn illustrations by the Yukito sisters are also interspersed throughout. The core cast remains Kenshiro, the stoic successor of Hokuto Shinken, along with his allies and adversaries like the brutal Raoh, the tragic Toki, and the villainous Shin and Jackal. However, their familiar dramatic moments are undercut by the nonsensical or overly literal translation, turning scenes of intense violence and pathos into surreal comedy. The entire volume functions as an English phrase book of sorts, enthusiastically promising that its contents will definitely cause inconvenience when traveling across the United States. The narrative arcs are not new stories but rather a chaotic, out-of-order tour through the major beats of the early original plot, including Kenshiro's quest to rescue his kidnapped fiancée Yuria, his confrontations with the various enforcers of the Southern Cross, and the early stages of the conflict with Raoh and his forces. The humor derives entirely from the clash between the epic, grim seriousness of the source material and the inept, cringe-inducing English forced upon it.
