Description
In a juvenile detention center, two young men form an unlikely bond that will alter the course of their lives. Ikuto Yagura, a fierce and straightforward brawler, was sent there after being wrongly accused of a robbery he did not commit. Ryoma Akai, quieter and carrying a heavy secret, arrives for a crime he actually did commit. During a guest lecture by mixed martial artist and event promoter Mikuru Asakura, the pair is deeply inspired by his message of rising above one’s past through sheer will and fighting spirit. Together they vow to earn a spot in Asakura’s one-minute, single-elimination tournament: Breaking Down.
Upon release, Ikuto and Ryoma move in with their respective mothers and begin working at a machining plant while training at the Hinotaka Fighting Gym, run by the stern but supportive former fighter Takayuki Hino. Their path is immediately obstructed by local delinquents. Jun Kishomaru, the hotheaded leader of a high school gang, and his right-hand man Kosuke Isaka repeatedly clash with Ikuto. Ryoma recognizes Kosuke as the man who once extorted him, leading to the robbery that landed Ikuto in juvie. A confrontational sparring session at the gym forces these tensions into the open: Ryoma defeats Kosuke in the ring, and Ikuto beats Jun using a rope‑a‑dope strategy. The rivalry slowly shifts into a grudging respect.
As the Breaking Down auditions approach, only Ikuto is selected to compete. Meanwhile, Jun is kidnapped by the TOKYOクリシュナ (Tokyo Krishna) gang, a violent semi‑criminal group led by the imposing Shizuka Mido. Kosuke, now seeking redemption, begs Ikuto and Ryoma for help. Despite Ikuto’s impending fight, the two cannot abandon someone in need. They storm the gang’s hideout alongside Jun’s friends and engage in a massive street brawl that culminates in a one‑on‑one battle between Ikuto and Mido. Ikuto’s right arm is broken, but he refuses to give in and eventually knocks Mido down. Mido, secretly recognizing his own younger self in Ikuto, lets them escape.
Because of his injury, Ikuto cannot fight in the tournament. He asks Ryoma to take his place, and Asakura agrees. Ryoma’s opponent is Joey Sadoshima, the son of the prosecutor who is trying to frame Ikuto’s father for a murder he did not commit. Before the match, Ryoma finally confesses to Ikuto that he was the true perpetrator of the robbery, but Ikuto reveals he already knew. The manga’s narrative drives toward this climactic match, where the two friends must prove that their bond and hard‑earned skills can overcome both past mistakes and external enemies.
The manga adaptation, drawn by Gohoubi and based on the original screenplay by Shin Kibayashi and YOAKE FILM, began serialization in Weekly Young Magazine in October 2024 and later moved to Young Magazine Web. It compresses the film’s story into a fast‑paced street‑fighting sports drama, emphasizing the raw emotion of young men using their fists to forge their own futures. Through gym training, gang wars, and the looming goal of the Breaking Down ring, the series explores themes of redemption, loyalty, and the refusal to be defined by one’s worst moments.
