A twenty-nine-year-old workaholic named Renge Osusuki is abruptly fired from her company. Returning home, she discovers her fiancé in the middle of an affair with a stranger. Stifling her fury and heartbreak, Renge decides to finally visit a place she had always longed to go: Kyoto. In the historic Fushimi district of the city, she encounters a mild-mannered university student who is obsessed with traditional sweets and lives in an old townhouse, as well as a talking black fox. What was meant to be a healing escape quickly pulls Renge into a series of supernatural incidents, or ayakashi encounters, one after another. As she navigates these strange events, she finds herself drawn into the sweet-obsessed student's world and the mysteries surrounding the chatty fox, blending cohabitation, romance, and the uncanny in the atmospheric setting of old Kyoto.
