Only those who sincerely wish to sever a bond can find the Zetsuen Jinja, a mysterious shrine of absolute severance. There, the enigmatic priestess Emma presents a black ema. Writing a wish on it guarantees that the unwanted tie will be cut, but the method is known only to the gods and cannot be chosen; the result is always unpredictable—sometimes leading to happiness, sometimes to utter despair.

The story unfolds as an omnibus of interconnected lives, each episode focusing on a different person burdened by a toxic relationship or obsessive attachment. A beauty publicist named Misaki, terrified of aging, wishes to sever her bond with time itself. A housewife, Maho, wants to cut the thread linking her husband to his lover. A mother, Fumiko, seeks to break free from her violent son. Others come to the shrine hoping to be freed from stalkers, family abuse, dark part-time jobs, shopping addiction, or even ties to the dead.

Emma herself remains a cipher—a silent, observing presence who hands out the ema without explanation. The narrative arcs form distinct episodes: the severance of aging (Rōi to no Enkiri), of infidelity (Furin to no Enkiri), of family bonds (Kazoku to no Enkiri), of a stalker, of shadowy employment (Yami Baito to no Enkiri), of compulsive spending (Kaimono Izon to no Enkiri), and of ties to the deceased (Shisha to no Enkiri). As each story progresses, the seemingly simple wish spirals into ironic or horrifying outcomes, exposing the greed, weakness, and karma hidden in everyday human desires. Though each tale stands alone, characters occasionally cross paths, subtly building a shared world where no severance is ever truly clean.
