Manga
Description
In the short story collection 20 Kōnen, mangaka INA weaves eleven standalone narratives that orbit the themes of memory, nostalgia, and the quiet persistence of the past within everyday life. The title, meaning “20 light-years,” evokes the vast distance between a moment experienced and the act of looking back at it. Each story is a snapshot of ordinary people – old friends reuniting after years apart, a child’s memory of a river, a house witnessing four decades of a family’s life, a scientific reverie on what memory even is – and the small, luminous details that anchor them in time. The settings range from a city walkway to a small-town shrine, an art room, and a road at dusk, rendered with the same gentle, observational eye that marks INA’s earlier essay manga. Notable arcs include the opening piece Atoms Feeling, which approaches memory from a molecular perspective, and the poignant title story 20 Kōnen, where four childhood friends gather to talk about a laser they once aimed at the moon and the distance between who they were and who they have become. No single protagonist ties the collection together; instead, the recurring “character” is the act of remembering itself, examined through moments of reunion, departure, and quiet reflection. The stories were originally published on the Torch web, contributed to other venues, or appeared in self-published zines, and together they form a cohesive meditation on how the smallest experiences can shine across years like starlight.
