Description
"Attack on Titan" is set in a world where humanity resides within enormous walled cities to protect themselves from the Titans, gigantic humanoid creatures that devour humans seemingly without reason. The story begins in Shiganshina District, a town within the outermost Wall Maria. Eren Yeager, a young boy, lives with his adoptive sister Mikasa Ackerman and their friend Armin Arlert. Their relatively peaceful existence is shattered when a colossal Titan breaches the wall, allowing smaller Titans to invade. During the chaos, Eren witnesses his mother being eaten by a Titan, fueling his deep-seated hatred for the creatures.
Eren, Mikasa, and Armin join the military to fight against the Titans. Eren’s determination to eradicate the Titans intensifies when he discovers he possesses the ability to transform into a Titan himself, a power he later learns is shared by others, including his father, Grisha Yeager. This revelation uncovers a deeper conspiracy involving the origins of the Titans and the true nature of the walls. The military is divided into three branches: the Survey Corps, which ventures outside the walls to combat Titans and uncover secrets; the Garrison, which defends the walls; and the Military Police, which maintains order within the inner walls. Eren and his friends join the Survey Corps, driven by their desire to reclaim humanity’s freedom.
As the story progresses, it becomes clear that the Titans are not the only threat. Human factions, such as the Marleyan government, view the people within the walls as enemies due to their Eldian heritage, a race historically oppressed and used as weapons of war. The narrative explores themes of survival, freedom, and the cyclical nature of violence. Key characters include Levi Ackerman, a skilled soldier and captain of the Survey Corps; Erwin Smith, the charismatic and determined commander; and Historia Reiss, a royal descendant with ties to the walls’ secrets. The story delves into the moral complexities of war, as characters grapple with their roles in perpetuating conflict and the sacrifices required to achieve peace.
The plot escalates with the revelation that the Titans were created by the Eldian Empire centuries ago, and the walls were constructed using the power of the Founding Titan, a Titan with the ability to control others. Eren’s transformation into the Attack Titan and his possession of the Founding Titan’s power place him at the center of the conflict. The final arcs focus on Eren’s radical plan to eliminate all threats to Eldia by initiating the Rumbling, a catastrophic event that unleashes countless Titans to destroy the world beyond the walls. The series concludes with a climactic battle as former allies and enemies unite to stop Eren, questioning the cost of freedom and the legacy of humanity’s choices.
