Jason Gray-Stanford

Description
Jason Gray-Stanford is a Canadian actor recognized for his extensive work in voice-over for English dubs of Japanese anime, particularly those produced by Ocean Studios in Vancouver during the 1990s. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in theatre from the University of British Columbia, which laid the foundation for his acting career. His voice acting portfolio includes a range of roles in original video animations and television series from that era.

Gray-Stanford provided the English voice for Yuta in the 1993 original video animation Mermaid's Scar, a horror-fantasy story based on Rumiko Takahashi's Mermaid Saga. He also voiced the titular character, the Ogre Slayer, in the 1995 OVA series Ogre Slayer, an adaptation of the manga about a warrior born to hunt ogres. Another significant early role was as Ran, the protagonist of the 1992 sci-fi OVA series Green Legend Ran, a three-episode story set in a post-apocalyptic world. In the television series Ronin Warriors, known in Japan as Legendary Armor Samurai Troopers, he voiced the character Kento Rei Fuan, one of the primary warriors.

Beyond these specific credits, his broader anime voice work includes several prominent dubs. He is the original English voice of Yusaku Godai in the initial episodes of the Maison Ikkoku OVA series. For fans of the Dragon Ball Z franchise, he voiced the Saiyan villain Raditz and the character Cui in the Ocean Group dub. His other roles include Joe Higashi in the Fatal Fury OVAs and films, and Shinnosuke in the Ranma ½ OVAs.

His work frequently involved collaborations with the same Vancouver-based talent pool. In Mermaid's Scar, he worked alongside Lalainia Lindbjerg and other regulars like Janyse Jaud and Kathleen Barr. In Green Legend Ran, his co-stars included David Kaye, Janyse Jaud, and Paul Dobson. This group of voice actors formed a core cast for many anime dubs produced in Vancouver during that period.

While he is widely known for his live-action role as Lieutenant Randy Disher on the television series Monk, his contributions to anime voice acting during the 1990s form a significant part of his career. He is credited as the first English voice for several iconic anime characters, including Yusaku Godai and Raditz, marking him as a notable figure in the history of North American anime localization.
