Makoto Tsumura
Description
Makoto Tsumura is a Japanese voice actress born on July 22, 1965, in Hokkaido, Japan. Her real name is Yumie Tsumura. She decided to pursue a career in voice acting after being inspired by foreign films she watched on television as a child. Her professional journey began in 1991 when she entered a training school attached to Ezaki Productions. From 1993 to 2007, she was affiliated with Mausu Promotion, the former Ezaki Productions. After a period as a freelancer and subsequent affiliations with D-Color and Aksent, she joined Aoni Production in December 2018, where she continues her career.
Tsumura is known for her natural and expressive boyish voice, which has allowed her to portray a wide range of characters, from young boys to animals and lively girls, with a vocal range reportedly covering from E3 to C6. A significant milestone in her career was being cast as the lead character Takato Matsuda in the 2001 television series Digimon Tamers. This role became one of her most beloved and recognized performances. She later reprised the role in several Digimon films and series, including Digimon Tamers: Battle of Adventurers and Digimon Tamers: Runaway Locomon.
Another major achievement is her succession in two long-running and iconic anime roles. In 2003, she took over the voice of the titular character Atom for the new Astro Boy television series, a role originally played by Mari Shimizu. Then, in 2005, she became the third voice actress to play Wakame Isono in the nationally beloved and long-running series Sazae-san, succeeding Michiko Nomura. Her filmography is extensive and includes many other notable roles. In Ghost Stories, she voiced Leo Kakinoki. She played the role of Kakeru Sakamaki in Idaten Jump and Captain Blue Jr. in Viewtiful Joe. In the 1997 film The Dog of Flanders, she provided the voice for the protagonist, Nello. Her other anime credits include Selim Bradley in Fullmetal Alchemist, a young Kimimaro in Naruto, Shogo Ushiyama in Paranoia Agent, Kimihiro Tsutsui in Hikaru no Go, and various roles in long-running series such as Pokémon and Bleach. She also voiced a young Sam Winchester in the Japanese dub of Supernatural: The Anime Series.
Beyond anime, Tsumura has an extensive body of work in video games and dubbing foreign films and television series. She voiced the character Makoto in Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike and its sequel Super Street Fighter IV, specifically using the Tosa dialect for the role. She is also the regular Japanese dub voice for the character Ratchet from the Ratchet & Clank video game series. Her dubbing work in animation includes the roles of Mac in Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends and Rudy in ChalkZone.
