Francine Laine

Francine Laine was a French actress primarily known for her extensive work in voice dubbing, particularly for animated series. Born on July 20, 1945, in Paris, she passed away on June 30, 2014, in Collias, France. In addition to her voice work, she was also a singer during the 1970s.

Laine's career was prolific, lending her voice to numerous anime and Western animated series for the French market. She is perhaps best recognized for her various roles in the beloved magical girl franchise Ojamajo Doremi, known in French as Magical Dorémi. Across the different series, including Ojamajo Doremi, Mo~tto! Ojamajo Doremi, Ojamajo Doremi Sharp, and Ojamajo Doremi Dokkaan, she voiced multiple key characters: the frog witch Majorika, also known as Maggie Grigri or Bobosse; the mother of the protagonist Doremi; and the ethereal Reine de la Magie, the Queen of Magic. She also voiced the character Mindy (Momoko) in the series.

Beyond this franchise, Laine had a significant presence in other major anime series dubbed in France. She was a prominent voice in the iconic series Sailor Moon, where she was the second voice for the character Raya, known as Sailor Mars, and also voiced Sailor Uranus, among other roles. In the Dragon Ball Z franchise, she provided the voice for the character Krilin during replacement episodes and in several movies, and also voiced Chichi in some productions. Her other notable anime roles included Malicia in X-Men, the Archduchess Sophie in Princesse Sissi, and Sauria in Ulysse 31.

Her work was not limited to Japanese animation. Laine also voiced numerous characters in American and European productions, such as Félibelle in Cosmocats (ThunderCats), Janine in the French version of the original Ghostbusters animated series, and various roles in series like Fraggle Rock and Candy. Her extensive and versatile voice work made her a familiar presence to French audiences who grew up watching these shows in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s.
