Monika Antonelli
Description
Monika Antonelli is a voice actress and librarian best known for her work on the English dub of the Dragon Ball franchise produced by Funimation. She was born on February 17, 1959. Before her career in voice acting, Antonelli worked as a librarian for the Denton Public Library in Denton, Texas, where she also provided the voice for the library's mascot, Whiffles the Bunny.
Antonelli entered the voice acting industry after discovering a casting call flyer while working as a librarian at the University of North Texas in 1996. Holding both a bachelor's and master's degree in theater, she submitted an audition tape demonstrating her vocal range and was subsequently hired by Funimation, the company responsible for the English adaptation of the Dragon Ball series. She is considered one of Funimation's original voice actors from the early production of the Dragon Ball dub.
Antonelli is most recognized for providing the voices for two characters in the Dragon Ball universe: Puar, a shape-shifting creature, and Chiaotzu, a small, centuries-old fighter. For Puar, she employed a squeaky, high-pitched voice, while she used a more boyish tone for Chiaotzu. Her extensive work within the franchise includes the original Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, and Dragon Ball GT, as well as numerous films such as Dragon Ball Z: Bojack Unbound, Dragon Ball Z: The Tree of Might, Dragon Ball: Mystical Adventure, Dragon Ball: The Path to Power, Dragon Ball Z: The History of Trunks, and Dragon Ball: Sleeping Princess in Devil's Castle. In addition to the television series and films, she also reprised her roles for several early Dragon Ball Z: Budokai video games. She noted that her finest work as a voice actor was a dramatic scene in which her character Chiaotzu sacrifices himself for his friends.
The voice acting process for an English dub of an anime required Antonelli to match her line delivery to the animated lip movements of the original Japanese version, which she described as a complicated process. She typically recorded her lines for two to three hours every week or two, often receiving direction from fellow voice actor Christopher Sabat. She worked alongside many other voice actors throughout her career, collaborating with over two hundred different performers on various titles.
Antonelli relocated from Texas to Mankato, Minnesota in 2007. As a result of this move, she was unable to reprise her roles in Dragon Ball Z Kai and subsequent Dragon Ball media, with actress Brina Palencia later replacing her as the voice of Puar and Chiaotzu. Despite leaving professional voice acting, she has expressed a willingness to return to the profession. She continues to work as a librarian and has discussed her unique career path, encouraging aspiring voice actors to pursue any available opportunities.
