Description
Chiaotzu is a white-skinned, red-cheeked human who stands out for his short stature and lack of a visible nose, traits he shares with his fellow martial artist Krillin. His unique appearance is inspired by the Jiang Shi, or Chinese hopping vampire, a creature from folklore, which is also reflected in his fighting stance and abilities. Chiaotzu typically wears the uniform of the Crane School, including a distinctive cap, and despite his youthful and childlike appearance, his age generally progresses alongside the other human characters in the story. His name is a pun on the Japanese word for a type of Chinese dumpling, gyoza, which fits the series tradition of naming characters after food.

In terms of personality, Chiaotzu is generally quiet and reserved, but he possesses a brave and loyal heart, always willing to help his friends in a crisis. He has a somewhat childish nature, which was evident when he mocked Krillin for shortcomings that he himself possessed during their first encounter. A notable quirk is his inability to solve basic math problems quickly, a vulnerability that Krillin famously exploited during their match in the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament. Despite his quiet demeanor, he is deeply devoted to his training and to his best friend, Tien Shinhan.

Chiaotzu’s role in the story begins as a minor antagonist. He and Tien are introduced as students of Master Shen, the rival of Master Roshi, and enter the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament to defeat the Turtle School students. During this tournament, he uses his psychic powers to cheat by fixing the match order and fights against Krillin. He is ordered by his master to kill Krillin but refuses to obey Tien's orders to cheat during his match, showing the beginning of his moral shift. After witnessing the folly of their master's teachings, both he and Tien defect from the Crane School and become allies of Goku and the other Z Fighters. His commitment to his new friends is demonstrated almost immediately during the fight against the Demon King Piccolo. In a desperate attempt to prevent the villain from wishing for his youth, Chiaotzu tries to summon the Eternal Dragon and make a different wish but is quickly killed by Piccolo. Following Piccolo's defeat, he is later revived with the Dragon Balls.

Throughout Dragon Ball Z, Chiaotzu continues to fight alongside the other Z Fighters, though he often finds himself outmatched by the escalating power of their enemies. His defining moment in the Saiyan Saga comes when he bravely, but futilely, uses a self-destruct technique in an attempt to destroy the mighty Saiyan warrior Nappa. The attack has no effect on Nappa, and Chiaotzu is killed in the explosion. He is later revived once again. This act of self-sacrifice highlights his courage and his willingness to give his life for his friends, even against an overwhelmingly powerful opponent. After this saga, his role as a frontline fighter diminishes significantly. He continues to train with Tien and makes occasional appearances, such as during the Cell and Buu Sagas, but largely remains on the sidelines, having fallen behind the power levels of the Saiyan characters.

Chiaotzu's defining relationship is with Tien Shinhan. He is Tien's constant companion and best friend, following him loyally from their days as villains to their lives as heroes. Tien acts as a mentor and protector, while Chiaotzu is fiercely devoted to him, even refusing an order from their master to kill Tien. He becomes a trusted ally to the other Z Fighters, including Krillin, Yamcha, and Goku, though his strongest bond remains exclusively with Tien. He is also a student of the Crane School, and despite being an Earthling, his training has granted him a variety of supernatural abilities.

Chiaotzu is notable for his psychic powers, which set him apart from many other martial artists. His primary abilities include telekinesis, which he can use to move objects, fire projectiles, or even paralyze an opponent by attacking their internal organs. He also possesses telepathy, allowing him to communicate with others mentally. In terms of energy-based combat, he is proficient in the Dodon Ray, a powerful and precise beam attack fired from the index finger, which is a signature technique of the Crane School. He can also use the Bukujutsu technique to fly. One of his most desperate techniques is a powerful self-destruction move where he detonates his own life force to create a massive explosion. Throughout his training, he has also shown the ability to mimic other techniques, such as the Masenko. At his peak during the Saiyan Saga, his official power level was recorded as 610.
