Description
Six-year-old Daisy is reeling from the sudden death of her mother in a tragic accident. Sent to live with her aunt, she struggles to adjust to a new life centered around the family's modest downtown yakisoba restaurant, a small world filled with the smells of fried noodles and the quiet routines of grief. Unable to sleep one restless night, Daisy encounters a mysterious girl named Dahlia at her window. As their friendship deepens, the days they spend together begin to transcend normal reality, bending time and space and infusing Daisy’s constrained daily existence with a cosmic sense of wonder.
The story traces Daisy’s emotional journey from this childhood loss into adulthood. More than ten years later, Daisy is now grown, living with her aunt and uncle and helping to make yakisoba at their shop. During the rainy season, on a night of pouring rain that mirrors the storm when she lost her mother, a letter arrives from Brazil. This letter speaks to a mysterious connection between two lonely souls separated by vast distance, a bond that suggests the two will never meet again.
Directed by Masaaki Yuasa and based on Banana Yoshimoto’s novel Hinagiku no Jinsei, the film features character designs by Yoshitomo Nara for the childhood sequences. The narrative deliberately contrasts the protagonist’s limited physical world—what Yuasa describes as a life lived within a 100-meter radius around the restaurant—with a much larger, almost cosmic perspective on human connection and healing. While there are vividly unsettling moments, the story moves toward a conclusion described as profoundly happy, like a long-held dream.
