Description
In June 1863, in Kyoto during the final turbulent years of the Edo period known as the Bakumatsu, a man with no memories is found and brought to the headquarters of the Mibu Roushigumi. This group of masterless samurai would later become known as the Shinsengumi, a military police force that fought to maintain the power of the Tokugawa shogunate. The man is taken in by Soji Okita, the group’s charismatic and renowned vice-commander, who gives him a new name: Jinsuke Tachikawa. With no past to call his own, Jinsuke begins a new life as a member of the Mibu Roushigumi.

As Jinsuke struggles to adapt to his new identity, he is thrust into the violent political chaos of Kyoto, where pro-shogunate forces clash with imperial loyalists in the streets. The central narrative follows Jinsuke as he fights alongside his new comrades while gradually uncovering fragments of his forgotten past. His relationship with Soji Okita serves as an emotional anchor, with Okita acting as a mentor and protector who is also a tragic figure, historically remembered as a brilliant swordsman who died young. The story explores the fleeting youth of these young warriors living in a time of immense upheaval. The mystery of Jinsuke’s former life builds throughout the plot, and when he finally regains all his memories, the world around him is forever changed.

The main cast includes Daisuke Sakuma as the protagonist Jinsuke Tachikawa, Yuki Kaji as Soji Okita, and Aoi Yuki as a Mibu Roushigumi member named Hyogo Koganei. Other notable historical figures appearing as supporting characters include Isami Kondo, the commander of the group, and Toshizo Hijikata, its vice-commander. The series features an original story written by playwright Yutaka Narui, known for his theatrical works centered on the Shinsengumi. The animation is produced by studios Live2D Creative Studio and Drive Inc., under the direction of Tomohiro Kawamura.

Notable narrative arcs include Jinsuke’s induction into the Mibu Roushigumi and his early struggles to earn the trust of his new allies. As the group transforms into the Shinsengumi and gains prominence, Jinsuke and his comrades are swept into the era’s escalating conflicts. A key arc involves the gradual recovery of Jinsuke’s memories, which may reveal a past connected to the very forces the Shinsengumi oppose. The story also highlights the internal dynamics and loyalties within the Shinsengumi itself, showcasing the bonds and rivalries among its legendary members. A theatrical advance version is scheduled for release in 2026, with the TV series premiere set for January 2027.
