Description
Kimie Hanada is a significant figure in the criminal underworld portrayed in Crying Freeman. She is introduced as the wife of Ryuji Hanada, a powerful and ruthless yakuza leader known as The Blade who is the second most powerful member of the Hakushin Society. Following her husband’s death at the hands of the protagonist assassin Freeman, Kimie emerges as a formidable player in her own right, driven by a complex mixture of vengeance, ambition, and ultimately, a surprising and transformative infatuation.

Kimie is a woman of high standing and influence. As the wife of Ryuji, she holds a position as one of the most powerful women within the Hakushin Society hierarchy. Her personality is defined by a potent combination of cunning, seduction, and a ruthless pragmatism. Unlike her husband, whose approach is more direct and violent, Kimie prefers to operate through manipulation and psychological control. This is immediately demonstrated after Ryuji is killed; rather than retreating, she launches a cold and calculated scheme to avenge him. To locate Emu Hino, the woman who holds the key to finding Freeman, Kimie seduces Detective Nitta, a police officer. She secures his cooperation not through trust, but by arranging for compromising photographs of them together to be taken, effectively blackmailing him into becoming her pawn and lover. This act showcases her primary weapon: the ability to use her sexuality as a tool for leverage and information.

Her initial motivation is singular and focused: to avenge her husband's death by hunting down Freeman. This quest for revenge leads her and the ensnared Detective Nitta to Freeman's hometown. However, her journey takes a sharp turn when they finally confront him. Freeman spares their lives after stabbing them both in the chest, forcing them to accept an alibi that absolves him of the crimes they are investigating. This encounter, rather than quenching her thirst for vengeance, seems to plant a seed of obsession.

Kimie's character undergoes a significant evolution when she later resurfaces as a follower of a cult known as Kumagaism. She allies herself with the cult's leader, Naiji Kumaga, who plots to seize control of the powerful 108 Dragons triad by creating a perfect clone of Freeman. In this chilling conspiracy, Kimie is given a unique and intimate task: to sleep with the real Freeman in order to absorb and document his every sexual habit, movement, and pattern. This information is then to be programmed into the clone, allowing it to perfectly deceive Freeman's own wife. This mission is intended to be the ultimate act of manipulation, a clinical dissection of a man's most private self.

Yet, this is where her motivations flip entirely. Tasked with observing Freeman's prowess, which is depicted as extraordinary, Kimie instead finds herself genuinely captivated. The mission fails because she falls in love with the target. Her carefully constructed world of manipulation collapses as she becomes the one who is emotionally compromised. Instead of betraying Freeman to Kumaga, she betrays Kumaga for Freeman, confessing the entire conspiracy to him. This act represents a complete reversal of her initial character: the avenger becomes the lover, the betrayer becomes the loyal ally.

Throughout her story, Kimie’s notable abilities are largely psychological. She is a master of seduction, capable of turning a police detective into a compliant asset. She possesses immense willpower and a talent for strategic, long-term plotting, as seen in her elaborate revenge scheme and her later infiltration of Freeman’s life. While she participates in the violent world of the yakuza, her influence is wielded through relationships and information rather than direct combat. Her appearance often reflects her multifaceted nature, frequently dressed in traditional kimonos that contrast with the brutal reality of her actions, though she also adopts more pragmatic and revealing attire when the situation demands it.

Ultimately, Kimie Hanada is a character who begins as a classic femme fatale, a grieving widow turned scheming avenger. However, her narrative arc transforms her into a woman undone by her own assignment, whose search for revenge is supplanted by a genuine, life-altering love for the man she was sent to destroy. Her journey is one from the cold calculation of the criminal boardroom to the chaotic vulnerability of genuine passion.
