Description
Mumei, whose real name is Hozumi, is the main female protagonist of Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress. She is a twelve-year-old girl who appears at first as a mysterious and anonymous figure, but is soon revealed to be a Kabaneri, a human transformed into a being with powers similar to the undead Kabane while retaining her human consciousness. Unlike the protagonist Ikoma, who became a Kabaneri after being bitten, Mumei volunteered to undergo the transformation through a blood injection given by her adoptive brother, Biba Amatori. The name Mumei means "nameless," a title Biba bestowed upon her, and it reflects her initial lack of a clear identity.
Her personality is lively, cheerful, and playful, often teasing those around her and displaying a carefree attitude. She is strong-willed, fiercely independent, and famously declares that she knows no fear. Despite her youthful demeanor, she possesses a cold and professional ruthlessness when fighting Kabane, showing no mercy. Beneath her lighthearted exterior lies a deeply ingrained resolve to protect humanity, driven by the losses she has suffered. She experiences sorrow when witnessing the abandonment of stations and gradually becomes conflicted about her own humanity as she uses her powers.
Mumei’s primary motivation evolves over the story. Initially, she is wholly devoted to Biba, viewing him as her elder brother and fighting under his orders. However, as she bonds with Ikoma and other survivors aboard the Iron Fortress, she begins to question her purpose and her past. A turning point occurs when she confronts her own identity and her relationship with Biba. She ultimately chooses to embrace her role as a protector of humanity, moving beyond being a mere tool for her brother’s plans.
Her role in the story is central: she is the most skilled and powerful fighter among the Kabaneri, acting as a guardian for the passengers of the Iron Fortress. She clears paths through hordes of Kabane, defends the train, and forms a key partnership with Ikoma. Her combat abilities are extraordinary—she wields dual swords with masterful proficiency, possesses superhuman agility and strength, and can leap across rooftops and engage Kabane in hand-to-hand combat. When she removes the blue restraint cord around her neck, her abilities are greatly enhanced, allowing her to defeat dozens of Kabane at once. However, prolonged use of this released state risks compromising her humanity and forces her into a deep sleep to recover.
Key relationships shape her development. With Ikoma, she shares a bond forged from their shared condition as Kabaneri; his lack of fear and his invention of the Piercing Gun earn her curiosity and respect, and he becomes her emotional anchor. Biba Amatori is the most complex figure in her life—he gave her a new identity and purpose, but his manipulative and radical methods ultimately drive her to break away. Her biological mother, who gave her the name Hozumi, appears in her memories, and the wish behind that name—to live a full life—becomes important to her self-understanding.
Throughout the series, Mumei’s development is marked by her struggle to define herself beyond the name and role imposed on her. She grows from a fearless but emotionally detached fighter into someone who fights for a chosen cause, willing to protect those who cannot protect themselves. Her journey highlights themes of self-discovery, identity, and the fight to retain one’s humanity in the face of overwhelming darkness.
