Description
Jaco, whose full name is Jaco Teirimentenpibosshi, is a supporting character from the Galactic Patrol, an intergalactic law enforcement organization. His background, while explored in a dedicated manga prequel, is integrated into the story of Dragon Ball Super through his long-standing association with the Briefs family. Originally, Jaco was dispatched to Earth with a mission to intercept a Saiyan infant sent to destroy the planet. However, due to a combination of incompetence and distraction, he failed to notice the arrival of that very infant, who would grow up to be the Earth’s greatest defender, Goku. This failure is a defining, if unspoken, aspect of his history on Earth.

During this original assignment, Jaco crashed his ship and befriended an elderly scientist named Omori and a young woman named Tights, who is Bulma’s older sister. Through this connection, he met a child prodigy, Bulma, who would later repair his spaceship. This established a long-term, unofficial partnership with Bulma, who often acts as a liaison between Jaco and the other Earthling fighters.

Personality-wise, Jaco is a contradictory figure who provides much of the comedic relief in the series. He possesses an immense and often inflated sense of pride in his position as a Galactic Patrolman, considering himself a super-elite officer. In reality, he is frequently clumsy, cowardly, and prone to panic, especially when confronted with overwhelming power, such as that of Beerus, Vegeta, or Frieza. He is also remarkably obtuse and socially awkward, making inappropriate comments about Bulma’s age or appearance, which usually results in a physical reprimand from her, someone he clearly fears. Despite his bravado, Jaco is easily flustered and has a selfish streak, as seen when he blames a space criminal for his own accidental destruction of a natural space reserve. However, beneath this veneer of cowardice lies a genuine, if often buried, sense of duty. When the situation becomes truly dire, he can overcome his fear, show bravery, and act heroically, proving that he is not entirely defined by his shortcomings.

Jaco’s primary motivation is to fulfill his duties as a Galactic Patrolman and protect his assigned sector of the universe, which includes Earth. While he often complains and seeks to avoid danger, his actions are consistently driven by a core sense of responsibility. His role in the story is multifaceted. He serves as a connection between the high-stakes, martial arts-focused world of the Z-Fighters and the larger, more bureaucratic universe of the Galactic Patrol. He often appears at crucial moments to provide information, transport, or support. For instance, he flies Bulma to the planet of the omniscient being Zuno to learn the secrets of the Super Dragon Balls. He also plays a significant part in the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga, where he formally enlists Goku and Vegeta to help recapture the escaped罪犯 Moro and later takes a proactive role in gathering the necessary allies to contribute to the final battle.

Key relationships heavily define Jaco’s character. His relationship with Bulma is the most significant, evolving from a childhood acquaintance to a dynamic where she orders him around and he reluctantly complies, often complaining but ultimately proving dependable. His deep-seated fear of Vegeta, Bulma’s husband, is a recurring source of humor. During the conflict with Moro, Jaco’s relationship with his superior, the elite patrolman Merus, becomes a catalyst for his growth. Merus’ competence and eventual sacrifice motivate Jaco to move beyond his usual passive role and take more decisive, valuable action. Though not a close friend, he has a working relationship with Goku and the other Z-Fighters, whom he respects for their power even as he fails to fully comprehend their strength.

Jaco undergoes subtle but notable development. Initially portrayed almost purely as comic relief and a bumbler, he proves his worth during the Moro arc. His most significant moment of growth is when he, on his own initiative and without being told by Bulma, seeks out the Grand Supreme Kai inside Majin Buu, a crucial act that provides the divine power needed for Goku to defeat Moro. This proactive step demonstrates a newfound sense of responsibility and resourcefulness, elevating him from a simple messenger to a genuine, if low-powered, hero.

Jaco possesses several notable abilities, though his power level is minuscule compared to the main Saiyan cast. He cannot fly under his own power or use ki-based attacks, relying instead on technological aids and his unique physiology. His most remarkable asset is his eyesight; he has demonstrated the ability to track movements that are imperceptible to even skilled fighters like Gohan and Piccolo, such as Goku moving at light speed. This makes him an invaluable observer. Physically, he is stronger than a typical human, capable of lifting several tons, and relies on a standard-issue laser gun for offense, which he uses effectively against weaker opponents. He is also agile and a skilled pilot of his personal spacecraft. While not a brawler, he is not entirely helpless, though he is no match for a serious threat like a full-powered Saiyan or a galactic criminal like Moro.
