Description
Sesshoumaru, the full-blooded demon son of the Great Dog Demon, inherits immense power and lordship over the Western Lands, a legacy he initially rejected to forge his own path. He harbors deep disdain for humans and half-demons, especially his half-brother Inuyasha, viewing their existence as weakness. This conviction fuels violent clashes, including severing Inuyasha's access to their father's grave and attempts to claim the sword Tessaiga. Thwarted by a barrier preventing his pure demon nature from wielding Tessaiga, and later losing an arm to Inuyasha in battle, Sesshoumaru accepts a prosthetic arm embedded with a Shikon Jewel shard from the manipulative Naraku, seeking to bypass the sword's restrictions. His early quest focuses solely on gaining power and battling formidable opponents, reflecting his cold detachment.

A pivotal shift begins when his father bequeaths him Tenseiga, a sword of healing that revives the dead. Initially dismissive of its purpose, Sesshoumaru gradually learns compassion. He rescues the young human girl Rin after bandits kill her family. Though initially indifferent, he permits her to travel alongside him after Tenseiga revives her twice. Rin's presence, along with his loyal retainer Jaken and the two-headed dragon A-Un, challenges his worldview. He demonstrates protectiveness toward Rin, even reversing Inuyasha's uncontrollable demon transformation to prevent harm to her, revealing a growing, unspoken sense of responsibility.

Centuries later, Sesshoumaru forms a family with the still-human Rin, fathering twin half-demon daughters, Towa and Setsuna. Soon after their birth, threats arise from Zero, sister of the powerful beast demon Kirinmaru. Zero places a fatal Silver-Scale Curse on Rin, linking their lives. To slow the curse and protect Rin, Sesshoumaru, aided by Jaken, places her in suspended animation within the Sacred Tree of Ages. To sustain Rin's life force, a portion of the mystical Dream Butterfly is placed on the infant Setsuna, transferring her dreams and sleep to her mother. This act preserves Rin but causes Setsuna to lose her memories and ability to sleep or dream. During an attack, Towa is sent through time to the modern era, separating the twins. Sesshoumaru adopts a distant but observant role in his daughters' lives, often intervening indirectly during their adventures.

When Kirinmaru seemingly kills Setsuna years later, Sesshoumaru appears before the distraught Towa and offers her the damaged Tenseiga, asking, "Won't you try this, Towa?" Towa successfully revives Setsuna, demonstrating Sesshoumaru's trust in his daughter and the sword's legacy. Later, he directly severs the connection between Setsuna and the Dream Butterfly, restoring her ability to sleep and dream, but accelerating the danger to Rin as the curse progresses unimpeded. His actions consistently aim to protect his family, even through difficult choices or an aloof demeanor. He engages Kirinmaru in direct combat, taking fatal blows intended for his daughters and Moroha (Inuyasha and Kagome's daughter), showcasing ultimate sacrifice. He later facilitates Moroha's reunion with her parents, trapped within the Black Pearl.

His relationship with Inuyasha evolves significantly. From initially seeking to kill his half-brother and seize Tessaiga, Sesshoumaru progresses to testing Inuyasha's control over his demon blood and subtly protecting him. He intervenes to reverse Inuyasha's uncontrolled transformations and deliberately holds back his full strength during their fights. By the Root Head incident (post-original series, pre-Yashahime), Sesshoumaru positions himself closer to Inuyasha, acting as a silent guardian, particularly after Kagome and other allies are separated. This proximity hints at a further-developed, though still complex, fraternal bond centered on mutual, unspoken protection.
