Description
Conan is the protagonist of the story, an 11-year-old boy who was born on Remnant Island after a great global catastrophe. He is one of the last survivors of a spaceship that crashed there during humanity’s final war, and was raised by the elderly survivors of that crew, a man he calls his grandfather. Having grown up in complete isolation from the rest of the world with only nature and his guardian for company, Conan knows nothing of the complex societies that have formed elsewhere.
Personality-wise, Conan is the embodiment of untainted innocence and quiet determination. He is kind-hearted, gentle, and considerate of others, having been raised by a grandfather who taught him the value of peace after witnessing the destruction caused by adult wars. Despite his immense physical power, he is notably naive about social customs and the cruelty of the outside world, yet this inexperience is balanced by a sharp, clever mind that adapts quickly to new situations. His most defining trait is his unwavering determination as a Determinator; once he sets a goal, such as rescuing his friend Lana, he pursues it with relentless tenacity, refusing to give up no matter how hopeless the situation appears. He is also deeply forgiving, never holding grudges or seeking revenge against those who wrong him. Instead, he looks past their actions to their humanity, a trait that gradually turns enemies into steadfast allies.
Conan’s motivations are simple but profound. Initially, his world consists only of his island and his grandfather. Everything changes when he finds Lana, a girl washed ashore, who is then kidnapped by the militaristic society of Industria. Conan’s primary drive is to rescue Lana and protect her from those who wish to exploit her abilities or harm her. Beyond this personal mission, he is motivated by a natural love for freedom and nature, often reacting with confusion and defiance against the oppressive industrialism and authoritarian control of places like Industria.
In the story, Conan serves as the magnetic hero who challenges a decaying and violent adult world. His main role is to be the catalyst for change, using his physical strength to fight against oppression, but more importantly, using his unbreakable spirit of trust to bridge divides between warring factions. He confronts the world’s remaining powers not for conquest, but to force them to remember their shared humanity. His journey takes him from a solitary boy to the key figure who unites disparate communities.
Key relationships define much of his journey. His bond with Lana is central; he acts as her fierce protector, carrying her to safety and fighting relentlessly to free her when she becomes a Damsel in Distress, while she provides the emotional anchor and social connection he lacks. He forms a deep Heterosexual Life-Partnership with Jimsy, a fellow wild child who matches his athleticism and becomes his closest friend and ally after a competitive first meeting. Unlike the adults who see him as a threat or a tool, Conan sees the good in the antagonists. He earns the respect of Monsley, a stern female commander who is so impressed by his strength and resolve that she eventually abandons her post to help him. Similarly, he shows kindness to the bumbling Captain Dyce after Dyce is left for dead, transforming a comic-relief villain into one of his most loyal supporters.
Conan undergoes subtle but significant development throughout the series. He begins as a Skilled but Naive boy who has never seen another human besides his grandfather. Through his adventures, he learns about social structures, betrayal, and sacrifice. While he remains fundamentally optimistic, he gains a deeper understanding of the world’s complexities and his role in shaping its future. By the end of the series, he is no longer just a boy reacting to danger, but a young leader who actively inspires change and lays the groundwork for a new era of peace.
Conan possesses remarkable, almost superhuman, physical abilities, a classic example of Charles Atlas Superpowers. Having spent his entire life in a rigorous natural environment, he is a Pint-Sized Powerhouse who can lift boulders, throw a pile of grown men off his back, and overpower armed soldiers with ease. He has incredible lung capacity, known as Super Not-Drowning Skills, allowing him to swim underwater for minutes at a time without surfacing. He is extremely agile and fast, often carrying Lana in his arms while performing massive leaps and sprints. A unique trait is his prehensile toes, which he developed from a lifetime of going barefoot; he can hang from ledges, grip objects, and even fire a harpoon using his feet with as much dexterity as his hands. While not a formal weapon, he is an expert marksman with a harpoon spear, able to throw it with pinpoint accuracy from great distances. Mentally, he is a Genius Bruiser, using quick wit and clever tactics to escape situations that sheer force alone cannot resolve.
