Description
Son Goku is a young boy who lives a solitary life deep in the mountains on Mount Paozu. He is easily identified by his most prominent physical feature, a monkey-like tail, and possesses superhuman strength and natural talent in martial arts, skills he developed through training with his now-deceased grandfather, Gohan. Having lost his grandfather, Goku lives on his own in their small house, preserving his grandpa’s memory by praying to a strange orange glowing ball that he keeps as a memento, believing it to contain his spirit.
Goku’s personality is defined by a profound and innocent naivety, a direct result of his isolated upbringing. Having never seen a car before, he mistakes Bulma’s vehicle for a monster and attacks it. He is initially bewildered by the outside world, considering Bulma a strange demon because she lacks a tail. Despite this wariness, he is fundamentally friendly and trusting, embodying his late grandfather’s advice to always be nice to girls, which is why he invites a complete stranger into his home. He lives by a pure and simple code, showing an eagerness to befriend almost anyone he meets, both good and bad, and his enthusiasm for physical challenges and good food, especially a large fish, is boundless.
In this story, Goku’s primary motivation is to become stronger, which is the reason he agrees to join Bulma on her quest for the Dragon Balls. He is initially reluctant to leave his home or part with his grandfather’s ball, but the promise of gaining greater strength convinces him to embark on the journey. His role in the narrative is that of the unwavering hero, whose incredible power and pure heart drive the plot forward. He plunges headfirst into danger, single-handedly storming the Red Ribbon Army’s Muscle Tower and later their main headquarters. He acts as a liberator, freeing his captured friends and ultimately dismantling the army’s operation. He also serves as a catalyst for change in others, forming an unlikely and deep friendship with Android 8, a pacifist killing machine who finds redemption and a meaningful connection through Goku.
Goku builds several key relationships during his adventure. His first major friendship is with Bulma, a teenage genius who acts as his guide to the wider world, though he remains comically confused by basic aspects of life, such as the physical difference between boys and girls. He briefly clashes with the desert bandit Yamcha before they become allies. The most significant relationship, however, is with Android 8, whom Goku nicknames Eighter. Despite being ordered to kill him, Goku sees the goodness in the android, defends him from being destroyed, and engages him in a playful snowball fight, forming a pure bond of mutual respect and kindness. Goku also shows immense respect for the Turtle Hermit, Master Roshi, from whom he learns the legendary Kamehameha wave. His pure heart is visually proven when he is the only member of the group capable of riding the magical Flying Nimbus cloud given to him by Roshi.
Goku experiences significant development throughout this film, which culminates in a moment of raw, emotional transformation. Initially a happy-go-lucky child who fights for fun, he witnesses the apparent death of his new friend, Android 8, who sacrifices himself to protect Goku from the Red Ribbon Army’s ultimate weapon. Confronted with this profound loss, Goku undergoes a dramatic change. A new, overwhelming power awakens within him from a place of intense sadness and rage rather than joy or competition. This transformation is portrayed as a terrifying and tortured awakening that far surpasses his previous abilities, allowing him to finally obliterate the villain Staff Officer Black and his giant robot with a colossal Kamehameha wave. This event demonstrates the deep emotional bond he is capable of forming and the immense power that can be unleashed when his friends are threatened. In a selfless final act, after collecting all seven Dragon Balls, Goku does not wish for power for himself but instead uses the wish to revive Android 8 and ensure there is no bomb left inside him.
Goku’s notable abilities are a combination of his raw physical power and his quick mastery of martial arts techniques. He demonstrates superhuman strength from the beginning, easily throwing a car and defeating entire platoons of soldiers and tanks using only his extending Power Pole. His most impressive display of skill is his rapid learning of the Kamehameha wave. After witnessing Master Roshi perform the technique just once to destroy a fleet of battleships, Goku is able to replicate it immediately, using his own version to destroy a squadron of submarines shortly thereafter. In his final, enraged state, he unleashes this attack on a scale powerful enough to destroy a massive mech and its pilot in a single, devastating blast, showcasing the immense potential for growth that lies within him.
