Description
Dr. Kochin is a primary antagonist from the film Dragon Ball Z: The World's Strongest, serving as the devoted assistant to the brilliant but disembodied scientist Dr. Wheelo. In terms of background, Kochin was Dr. Wheelo’s lab assistant and a self-proclaimed expert in biotechnology. Decades before the events of the film, when Dr. Wheelo’s original body was failing and his laboratory became entombed in an avalanche of ice and snow, it was Kochin who preserved his mentor’s brain within a life-support system, effectively saving him from death and transforming him into a cyborg. Kochin then spent the next fifty years searching for the Dragon Balls. Once gathered, he used his wish to free Dr. Wheelo’s fortress from its icy prison, beginning his plan to find a suitable new body for his master.
In terms of personality, Dr. Kochin embodies the archetype of a mad scientist wholly dedicated to his master’s twisted ambitions. He is ruthless and calculating, showing no regard for the well-being of others as he pursues his goals. He displays a particular disdain for those who fail to recognize Dr. Wheelo’s genius, and he is determined to make humanity pay for rejecting them. His loyalty to Dr. Wheelo is absolute, driving every action he takes throughout the story. His motivations are intrinsically linked to his master; he seeks to obtain the body of the world’s strongest fighter for Dr. Wheelo to use, while also harboring a deep-seated desire for revenge against the human race for their perceived disrespect.
In the story, Dr. Kochin plays the active role of the field commander, executing the plans to secure a new body for Dr. Wheelo. He creates three powerful Bio-Warriors named Kishime, Misokatsun, and Ebifurya to act as his enforcers. His key actions include capturing and brainwashing Piccolo while the Namekian was training in the mountains. He and his Bio-Men also raid Kame House, successfully kidnapping Bulma and Master Roshi to lure the other fighters into a trap. He spends most of the film inside Dr. Wheelo’s fortress, monitoring the battles from the control room.
Key relationships define his role entirely. His sole significant relationship is with Dr. Wheelo, to whom he acts as a loyal and indispensable assistant. He is the driving force behind his master’s survival and the subsequent plot for revenge, displaying a single-minded devotion that ultimately leads to his downfall.
As the film progresses, a notable development is the revelation regarding Dr. Kochin’s true nature. When he attempts to kill Krillin, the skin on his hand rips away to reveal a mechanical machine gun, hinting that he is more than just an elderly scientist. Later in the climax, after Dr. Wheelo inadvertently knocks him from a high platform, Kochin falls into a powerful energy field. The electricity arcs through his body, burning away his skin and clothes to expose the simple, metallic robot frame beneath, confirming that he was an android all along. He explodes shortly after, uttering his master’s name one last time.
Regarding his notable abilities, despite having an official power level of only 8, Dr. Kochin is equipped with several hidden weapons and scientific skills. His primary weapons include his left hand, which can transform into a rotary machine gun known as the Vulcan Cannon, which he uses in an attempt to kill Krillin. He also carries a distinctive blue, drill-like cane, which the film identifies as a Madness Wand. The top of the cane can open to reveal a button that, when pressed, fires a gigantic and powerful energy blast. He is also a master of biotechnology, creating the Bio-Warriors and Bio-Men, and possesses the necessary technology to brainwash powerful warriors like Piccolo.
