Description
Kadaj is a primary antagonist from the events following the original crisis, known as one of the Remnants of Sephiroth. His physical form is born from the Lifestream, specifically manifested from the will of the deceased Sephiroth as a "thoughtform," a physical embodiment of a consciousness or intense emotion. Kadaj represents the hatred and rage of his progenitor, and he serves as the leader of the trio that includes his companions Loz and Yazoo.

In terms of appearance, Kadaj is designed to look younger than the protagonist, with a slender and wiry frame. He possesses the defining traits shared by those connected to Jenova, including silver hair that falls across his face and distinctive green, cat-like eyes. He dresses in form-fitting black leather, comprising a long coat, gloves, and trousers, with an image of a single wing sewn onto the back of his coat as an allusion to Sephiroth. His signature weapon is the Souba, an unusual katana with two parallel blades that he carries in a sheath on his lower back and wields with his left hand.

Kadaj's personality is a volatile mixture of cruelty, instability, and a surprisingly childlike purity that exists alongside his sinister nature. He is described as embodying insanity, with an unpredictable speech pattern that can shift from rapid talking to slow, deliberate words or sudden, unexplained laughter. Despite his emotional instability, he is cunning, deceptive, and arrogant, often mocking his enemies, such as Rufus Shinra and the Turks. He views humanity as shallow fools who endlessly repeat their mistakes. While he treats those infected with Geostigma as his brethren and refers to the protagonist Cloud Strife as "brother" through their shared connection to Jenova, he considers Cloud a traitor and regards him with murderous contempt. Beneath his confidence lies a deep insecurity; he senses the presence of Sephiroth and is tormented by the fear that his "Mother," Jenova, prefers Sephiroth over him.

Kadaj's primary motivation is to find the remaining cells of Jenova, whom he refers to as "Mother," to bring about a second Reunion. He believes that by finding her, he and his brothers can conquer the Planet. However, he is largely unaware of the full extent of Sephiroth's influence over Jenova, making him an unwitting pawn in a larger plan to resurrect Sephiroth. His goal also involves utilizing the Geostigma plague, a disease caused by Jenova cells in the Lifestream that infects primarily children, to activate a "reunion instinct" in those afflicted, turning them into living guides to locate Jenova's remains.

In the overall narrative, Kadaj acts as the primary physical threat and the driving force of the conflict. He and his brothers first appear in the Northern Crater, where they ambush the Turks and begin their search for Jenova. They attack the protagonist to test his strength and later kidnap children suffering from Geostigma, taking them to the Forgotten City. At the City of the Ancients, Kadaj forces the children to drink corrupted water, awakening the Jenova cells within them to serve his purpose. He later attacks the city of Edge, summoning the creature Bahamut SIN to cause widespread destruction and force his enemies to reveal Jenova's location.

Kadaj shares a complex relationship with several key figures. He views Loz and Yazoo as his brothers, though as the leader, he is the most aware of Sephiroth's existence and their mission. He considers the protagonist Cloud to be a "brother" due to their shared Jenova heritage but hates him for rejecting that legacy. His relationship with Rufus Shinra is one of interrogation and intimidation, as he believes Rufus is hiding Jenova's head. Above all is his relationship with Jenova, whom he worships as his mother, and his unseen connection to Sephiroth, the master whose will unknowingly drives him.

The character exhibits notable development, primarily in the final moments of his existence. Upon finally acquiring Jenova's remains from Rufus, he is horrified at the shriveled state of what is left of "Mother." Driven to desperation after being defeated by the protagonist, he absorbs the Jenova cells, which allows Sephiroth to take complete control of his body and transform it into his own image. After Sephiroth is defeated, a wounded Kadaj reforms. As he lies dying, he hears the voice of Aerith Gainsborough from the Lifestream. Mistaking her voice for that of Jenova, he is finally comforted, calling out "Mother" as he willingly dissolves into the Lifestream. This ending suggests a release from Sephiroth's influence and a peaceful return to the Planet.

Kadaj possesses a wide array of remarkable abilities. He is a highly skilled swordsman capable of holding his own in combat against even a seasoned warrior like Cloud. He can manifest from and disperse into a black mist, allowing him to teleport, move unseen, and become immune to gunfire. He possesses powers inherited from Jenova, such as the ability to appear to others in the guise of deceased individuals from their memories, to read a person's consciousness through touch, and to manipulate pain by taking it away or returning it to a wound at will. He can summon and control shadowy creatures called Shadow Creepers from the negative Lifestream and use Materia to cast powerful magic like fire and lightning, as well as summon the colossal Bahamut SIN. Unlike many other antagonists, his power derives not from Jenova cells within himself, but from the negative Lifestream that composes his body and his nature as a personification of Sephiroth's memories.
