Description
Gowther is a central figure in The Seven Deadly Sins, known as the Goat's Sin of Lust. He is a being of great mystery and power, defined by his unique origin as a sentient doll created over three thousand years ago by a demon mage who shared his name. This creator, an elite warrior known as the Selflessness of the Ten Commandments, fashioned the doll in the image of his deceased lover, Glariza, giving him a male body to prevent any romantic attachment to his own creation. The doll Gowther initially acted as his creator's proxy to the outside world while the real demon was imprisoned for his pacifistic refusal to fight in the Holy War.
The character's personality is complex and evolves significantly. For most of the story, Gowther presents a detached, emotionless demeanor, his expression rarely changing as he speaks in a blunt, factual manner. This apparent coldness, however, stems from his constructed nature and a deliberate act of self-preservation. After a tragic romance with Princess Nadja of Liones over sixty years before the main story, Gowther experienced profound grief upon her death. In a desperate attempt to save her, he tore open her chest to implant his own artificial heart, an act that led to his arrest and condemnation as the Sin of Lust. Overwhelmed by pain, he chose to erase his own memories and discard his heart, resolving to live as an empty doll devoid of feeling. This explains his seeming inability to grasp social cues or emotions, often leading him to conduct "experiments" on others, such as brainwashing the Holy Knight Guila, purely out of curiosity about human sentiment.
Despite this, Gowther is not without a sense of care. He can act selflessly, as shown when he shields an orphan named Pelliot from danger. His core motivation is an intellectual and emotional quest to understand the nature of love, friendship, and the human heart—concepts he can observe but not innately feel. His title, the Sin of Lust, is thus ironic; it does not refer to carnal desire but rather to his obsessive yearning for emotional knowledge and his one, tragic act of desperate love.
Gowther's role in the story is multifaceted. As a member of the Seven Deadly Sins, he serves as a powerful tactical asset. His primary ability is Invasion, a formidable magical power that allows him to read, alter, and trap others within their own thoughts and memories. He wields his Sacred Treasure, the twin bow Herritt, to focus and amplify this power. In addition to Invasion, Gowther possesses other notable abilities. Because he is a doll, he is pseudo-immortal, able to survive decapitation and other normally fatal injuries, which can be repaired. He also has a limited ability to change his appearance, such as altering his hair color and length, which he uses for disguise. At Merlin's request, he was given a self-destruct device and installed with Balor's Magical Eye, which allows him to see the power levels—magic, strength, and spirit—of any target. His power level is rated at 3100, but after regaining his memories and emotions, it drastically increases to 35,400.
The most pivotal relationship in Gowther's backstory is with his creator. The original demon Gowther was a pacifist who sought to end the bloody Holy War. To achieve this, he devised a forbidden spell so powerful it could rewrite the memories of even the gods. However, it required more magic than he possessed. With the aid of his doll, he sacrificed his own life force to cast the spell on the Archangel Mael, transforming him into the Demon Prince Estarossa and forcing the Goddess Clan to end the war. The original Gowther asked the doll to fulfill the dream he could not and granted him a heart and free will before dying, making the doll Gowther his legacy and the bearer of his sin. This deep connection also explains his bond with Merlin, who was once a student of the original demon Gowther and holds great respect for the doll as the creator's "masterpiece".
Gowther's personal development culminates in his recovery of lost memories and the emotions that came with them. When his past is fully restored, his personality amalgamates the analytical, emotionless doll with his younger, more playful and affectionate self. He becomes capable of expressing genuine care and excitement, while still retaining his signature aloofness and direct way of speaking. He strives to be a kinder person, forging a new path that bridges his creator's compassionate ideals with his own hard-won experiences.
