Description
Koro-sensei is the homeroom teacher of Class 3-E at Kunugigaoka Junior High School, a yellow octopus-like creature with multiple tentacles and a perpetually smiling face. His skin color changes according to his emotional state, shifting from a neutral yellow to bright orange when pleased, dark purple when disappointed, green when arrogant, and pitch black when enraged.
His origins are rooted in human tragedy. He was once a legendary assassin known as the God of Death, born in the slums of an unknown country and raised without empathy, killing for profit. After being betrayed by his own apprentice, he was captured and subjected to antimatter experiments that transformed his body into its current form. During his confinement, he met Aguri Yukimura, the former teacher of Class 3-E, who was assigned as his observer. Through her kindness and compassion, he experienced genuine human connection for the first time and fell in love. When a laboratory accident—a mouse implanted with his cells exploding on the moon—caused the lunar destruction he was blamed for, the scientists moved to eliminate him. In his subsequent rampage, Aguri was fatally wounded while trying to stop him. Her dying wish was for him to become a teacher for her students. He honored that promise by taking on the role of Class 3-E's teacher, adopting the name Koro-sensei, a pun on "unkillable teacher," given to him by student Kayano Kaede.
Personality-wise, he is playful, whimsical, and often absurdly cheerful, yet beneath that exterior lies a profound wisdom and genuine care for his students. He is perverted, easily panicked, and has a tendency to overreact to minor embarrassments, but these quirks contrast sharply with his deep empathy and patience. He treats each student as an individual, understanding their strengths and weaknesses, and encourages them to develop their talents. He rarely shows anger, but when his students are in grave danger, he can become terrifyingly cold and lethal.
His primary motivation is the promise he made to Aguri: to guide Class 3-E to become better versions of themselves, both academically and personally. He believes that giving them the mission to assassinate him is the ultimate teaching tool, forcing them to grow through discipline, teamwork, and self-reliance. He accepts that his own life will end in March, whether by assassination or self-destruction, and he sees his students' success as his legacy.
In the story, he serves as both the central mentor and the primary target. His presence creates the series' central conflict: a class of underachieving, marginalized students must learn to kill their teacher before he destroys the Earth, all while he teaches them standard subjects and assassination techniques. He drives the plot by setting challenges, providing training, and gradually revealing his past, forcing the students to confront their own feelings about violence, loyalty, and growth.
Key relationships include his bond with the entire Class 3-E, but especially with Nagisa Shiota, the narrator who ultimately delivers the killing blow; Karma Akabane, a brilliant and rebellious student who often tests his limits; and Kayano Kaede, whose own tragic history is tied to Aguri Yukimura. He also has a complex dynamic with Kotaro Yanagisawa, the scientist who experimented on him, and the second Reaper, his former apprentice who seeks revenge. His relationship with Aguri Yukimura remains the emotional core of his character, shaping all his actions.
His development is a journey from a nihilistic killer to a devoted teacher. He learns to channel his immense power toward protection and education rather than destruction. Over the course of the year, he becomes more vulnerable, both physically and emotionally, as he allows himself to care deeply for his students. In the end, he willingly accepts his death, ensuring that his students graduate with the skills and confidence they need.
Notable abilities include movement at Mach 20, making him nearly impossible to catch; instantaneous regeneration from most injuries; telekinesis; a vast intellect that allows him to teach any subject; and the ability to molt his skin as a defensive measure. He can also enter an absolute defense form, compressing his body into an indestructible sphere for up to twenty-four hours. However, he has many weaknesses: special antimatter weapons designed specifically to harm him, an inability to swim because water causes his tentacles to swell and slow him, susceptibility to extreme heat and cold, motion sickness on public transport, and a distracted nature when faced with attractive women or sweets. These vulnerabilities are meticulously catalogued by his students, who use them in their assassination attempts.
