Description
Kumatetsu is a large, bear-like beast from the Beast Kingdom of Jutengai, introduced as one of two candidates to succeed the retiring Grandmaster. Despite his imposing physical presence and natural combat talent, he is initially portrayed as a lazy, brash, and socially awkward figure who lacks the discipline or humility expected of a leader. His personality is loud, proud, and often reckless, with a gruff exterior that masks deeper insecurities about his ability to inspire others or prove his own worth. He avoids responsibility and tends to act impulsively, but beneath the bluster lies a capacity for fierce loyalty and care.

His primary motivation is to become stronger and earn recognition, not merely for status but to validate himself in the eyes of the beast community. This desire leads him to reluctantly take on a human apprentice when the Grandmaster instructs him to find a disciple. The boy, Ren, is renamed Kyuta, and their relationship begins with constant clashes, as Kumatetsu struggles to teach and Kyuta struggles to trust. Over time, the two develop a deep, father-son bond. Kumatetsu’s role in the story revolves around being both a mentor and a stubborn counterpart to Kyuta, with their mutual growth driving the narrative.

Kumatetsu’s key relationships include his apprentice Kyuta, with whom he shares volatile but heartfelt interactions, his rival Iozen, a disciplined and respected boar-like beast who constantly contrasts with Kumatetsu’s unrefined style, and his loyal companions Tatara, a cynical monkey-like friend, and Hyakushuubou, a gentle pig-like adviser. These bonds gradually pull him away from isolation and teach him the value of connection and responsibility.

His development is central to the film. Initially a selfish loner who trains only for himself, Kumatetsu transforms into a devoted, selfless mentor. The turning points come through his fights with Iozen and his realization that Kyuta’s presence has filled his own emptiness. In the climax, after sustaining severe injuries, he makes the ultimate sacrifice by using his newly gained authority as lord to reincarnate into a deity form, a sword that resides within Kyuta’s heart, forever protecting him. This act completes his journey from a man who wanted only to stand alone to one who literally becomes part of someone else’s strength.

Notable abilities include immense physical strength, stamina, and a combat style reliant on brute force and surprising agility, said to be like that of a monkey despite his bulk. He is a formidable hand-to-hand fighter who eventually learns to blend raw power with strategic thinking, a refinement shaped by teaching Kyuta. His raw talent is such that even without formal grace, he can challenge the best warriors in the kingdom. Ultimately, his greatest power becomes the spiritual unity he achieves with his apprentice, transcending physical limits.
