Shuichi Akai is a 32-year-old British-American FBI agent of Japanese descent, originally from England, which he considers home despite his American citizenship. Tall and fit, he possesses short wavy black hair, often with strands falling over his right eye. Permanent dark circles frame his olive-colored eyes, contributing to a perpetually tired look, and he consistently wears a black knit cap. A left-handed heavy smoker, he favors bourbon. Until one year prior, he had waist-length hair, cutting it short following Akemi Miyano's death to "freshen up." His typical attire includes a gray jacket over a collared black shirt, black pants, and black shoes. Akai's family is deeply entwined with the Black Organization. Seventeen years ago, his father, Tsutomu Akai, vanished while investigating the Kohji Haneda and Amanda Hughes murder case. Before disappearing, Tsutomu instructed his pregnant wife, Mary Sera, and their two sons to hide in Japan. Akai later persuaded his mother to let him study in America to probe his father's disappearance. His younger sister, Masumi Sera, was born after he moved to the US; he first met her seven years later upon returning to Japan. His younger brother is Shukichi Haneda. Maternal relatives include the deceased Elena and Atsushi Miyano, their deceased daughter Akemi Miyano (his cousin and ex-girlfriend), and Shiho Miyano. After his studies, Akai joined the FBI under superior James Black, with Jodie Starling as his partner. Five years before the current timeline, Akai infiltrated the Black Organization using the alias Dai Moroboshi and the codename "Rye." His initial goal was intelligence gathering and accessing high-ranking members, particularly Shiho Miyano (Sherry), by dating her sister, the low-ranking Akemi Miyano. Though he initially used Akemi, genuine romantic feelings developed. Two years into his infiltration, he took assignments under executive agent Gin. The FBI planned to capture Gin at a warehouse meeting, but Akai's cover was blown due to colleague Andre Camel's accidental compromise. Gin never appeared, forcing Akai to break off the relationship with Akemi to protect her, losing contact. After Akemi was later killed by the organization, Akai declared Gin his personal enemy. Akai exhibits a stoic, detached, and introverted personality, coupled with strong loyalty. James Black notes he doesn't form close relationships easily, a trait intensified after Akemi's death. He rarely voices thoughts and prioritizes mission success over the emotional well-being of friends, family, and colleagues, causing significant distress. He prefers secretive, independent operations, sometimes deceiving or injuring allies if it serves his objectives. Socially awkward, he struggles to comfort or connect; his disguised attempts to approach Ai Haibara (Shiho Miyano's shrunken form) as Subaru Okiya heightened her fear. However, he shows moments of kindness, like giving his sister Masumi a meaningful task during an investigation after initially brushing her off. Highly intelligent and observant, Akai possesses analytical and deductive reasoning skills comparable to Shinichi Kudo. The Black Organization views him as a major threat, dubbing him the "Silver Bullet." He excels at detecting deception and anticipating enemy actions, such as setting a sniper ambush after realizing a transmitter was accidentally attached to the organization. Multilingual, he is knowledgeable in diverse fields including Morse code and origami. His firearms expertise is exceptional: a master sniper capable of hitting targets like a small piece of chewing gum in Gin's hand from 700 yards. He is also proficient with shotguns, firing singlehandedly with precision, and a skilled driver adept at high-speed maneuvers in traffic. After Akemi's death, Akai faked his own demise to protect allies and mislead the organization, assuming the identity of Subaru Okiya to operate covertly. During this period, he maintained indirect FBI contact and collaborated with Conan. Recently, during World Sports Games (WSG) events, he worked with Conan to thwart a kidnapping and murder plot targeting corporate sponsors. He coordinated protection for a high-speed train's maiden voyage and uncovered links to a 15-year-old Boston case involving similar kidnappings. His actions involved chasing culprits, physical confrontations with his sister Masumi and mother Mary (who initially didn't recognize his disguise), and ultimately revealing his true identity to execute a counter-operation. Akai's family significantly influences his activities. His mother, Mary Sera, and sister Masumi actively confront the Black Organization. He maintains a distant but protective relationship, sending Masumi instructional Jeet Kune Do videos. His brother, Shukichi Haneda, is less directly involved. Akai's unresolved feelings for Akemi Miyano and his drive to avenge her death continue to fuel his relentless pursuit of the organization.
