After Akemi's death, Akai faked his own demise to protect allies and mislead the organization, assuming the identity of Subaru Okiya to operate covertly. During this period, he maintained indirect FBI contact and collaborated with Conan. Recently, during World Sports Games (WSG) events, he worked with Conan to thwart a kidnapping and murder plot targeting corporate sponsors. He coordinated protection for a high-speed train's maiden voyage and uncovered links to a 15-year-old Boston case involving similar kidnappings. His actions involved chasing culprits, physical confrontations with his sister Masumi and mother Mary (who initially didn't recognize his disguise), and ultimately revealing his true identity to execute a counter-operation.
