Description
Fuuma Monou is a central figure in the narrative of X, introduced as a normal-seeming high school student whose life becomes inextricably linked to the fate of the world. He is the son of Kyogo Monou, the priest of the Togakushi Shrine, and the older brother of Kotori Monou. His mother, Saya, died when he was young. As a child, Fuuma and his sister were close friends with the series' protagonist, Kamui Shiro, with the three sharing a promise that Kamui would protect Kotori and Fuuma would protect Kamui. Years later, when a teenage Kamui returns to Tokyo, it triggers the destiny for which Fuuma was born: to be Kamui's "twin star".

In his original personality, Fuuma is depicted as a kind, gentle, and quietly沉稳 individual. He is a dutiful son who helps his father, a doting and protective older brother, and a well-liked student who excels in sports. His calm and somewhat reserved demeanor makes him seem mature for his age. However, this personality is fated to be shattered the moment Kamui makes his choice in the coming apocalypse. Because Fuuma is Kamui's opposite, when Kamui chooses to become a Dragon of Heaven—a group sworn to protect mankind—Fuuma is automatically forced to become the Kamui of the Dragons of Earth, whose mission is to destroy humanity to save the planet.

This transformation gives rise to an alter-ego that is cold-blooded, powerful, and profoundly tragic. In his first act as the Dark Kamui, Fuuma brutally attacks Kamui and murders his own sister, Kotori. His new personality is characterized by a chilling sadism, but also a strange, enigmatic sense of purpose. Unlike the more straightforwardly evil portrayal in some adaptations, the manga version of Fuuma is a more complex figure who often appears with a kind smile even while committing terrible acts.

His primary motivation and unique ability are intertwined: Fuuma can perceive the deepest, truest wish of any person he encounters, and he feels compelled to grant that wish. This act of granting wishes, however, often leads to the death or destruction of the wisher or their loved ones, as their true desires may be for an end to pain or a final connection. This unsettling power makes him a formidable and unpredictable antagonist. The central mystery of his character is his own true wish, which he states can only be granted by Kamui.

Fuuma's role in the story is that of the primary antagonist and Kamui's ultimate foil. As the leader of the Dragons of Earth, he orchestrates the destruction of Tokyo, directly opposing the Dragons of Heaven. His key relationships are defined by his transformation. His bond with Kamui, once a childhood promise of protection, becomes a twisted rivalry where Fuuma believes he must kill his former friend. His loving relationship with his sister, Kotori, ends in her horrific death at his hands, an event that cements his fall. He also interacts with his fellow Dragons of Earth, including Kanoe, who finds herself unable to understand his true nature, and the artificial being Nataku, whose death at Fuuma's own hands causes the Dark Kamui visible sadness.

Throughout the story, there are glimpses that Fuuma's original kind nature is not entirely erased. He expresses disappointment that humans wish to die for others rather than live, and he shows moments of unexpected mercy, such as warning a young girl and her mother to flee before he destroys their part of the city. This complexity suggests that even his dark alter-ego does not truly enjoy the violence or the goal of mankind's extinction. In the anime television series, this thread is followed to its conclusion, where Kamui's sacrifice allows Fuuma to be restored to his original personality. In the 1996 film, however, the story ends in unrelieved tragedy, with Kamui beheading Fuuma.

Notable abilities include superhuman speed, agility, and healing, as well as powerful telekinetic abilities. He is also a highly skilled swordsman, wielding a Sacred Sword that matches Kamui's own. However, his most defining and terrifying power is his ability to see into a person's heart and grant their deepest wish, making him not just a destroyer, but a dark genie who brings forth the truth of what people truly desire. This power, combined with his forced destiny, makes Fuuma a tragic figure—a gentle boy transformed into an agent of apocalypse, whose violence is a twisted form of fulfilling others' most secret longings.
