Description
Ginger is a character from the 1989 film Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone, where he serves as the right-hand man and primary leader of the three henchmen working for the villain Garlic Jr.. His background is largely tied to his master, as he is a loyal follower of Garlic Jr., and it is assumed he was part of the group that cared for and raised the young Garlic Jr. following the death of the boy's father. He belongs to the same race as his master, known as Makayans.
In terms of appearance, Ginger is notably the smallest of Garlic Jr.'s trio of underlings. Despite his stature, he most closely resembles Garlic Jr. in his overall look, though with a distinct skull-like nose that gives him the appearance of a vampire bat. His skin is a dark olive color and he possesses red eyes. He is typically seen wearing a large dark cloak that covers most of his body.
Ginger possesses a cunning and calculating personality, often displaying a leadership quality that makes him the most vocal and expressive member of his group. He has a sadistic streak and takes delight in overpowering his opponents, frequently taunting them during battle and exuding a high degree of confidence in his own abilities. However, his overconfidence and arrogance are his primary weaknesses, as he often underestimates his opponents. He is also shown to be somewhat theatrical, making grandiose displays of his attacks, and can be caught up in the moment, such as when he and his companions joyfully cheered their master's success. Despite his bravado, he is fiercely loyal to Garlic Jr., following his orders without hesitation to ensure his master's plans succeed. This loyalty defines his primary motivation, which is to serve Garlic Jr. by locating the seven Dragon Balls, eliminating anyone who gets in the way, and helping him achieve immortality.
Within the story of Dead Zone, Ginger is the driving force behind the trio's actions. He and his cohorts, Nikki and Sansho, are first seen ambushing and brutally defeating Piccolo to indirectly kill Kami, the Earth's guardian. Ginger is later tasked with finding the Dragon Balls and tracks the Four-Star Ball to the home of Chi-Chi and her son, Gohan. When Chi-Chi and her father, the Ox-King, refuse to hand over the ball, Ginger easily incapacitates them. When Gohan runs away with the ball, Ginger simply captures the boy and takes him, along with the ball, back to Garlic Jr.'s fortress. Ginger is visibly surprised when Garlic Jr. decides to keep and train Gohan rather than simply dispose of him. Finally, Ginger and Sansho are successful in retrieving the remaining Dragon Balls, and Ginger leads the cheers of victory when Garlic Jr. makes his wish for immortality.
Ginger's key relationships are primarily with his master and his two partners. He is the de facto leader of the trio, often taking charge and directing Nikki and Sansho. His primary role in the story's climax is as an obstacle for Goku. When Goku arrives to rescue his son, Ginger is determined to prevent the Saiyan from interfering. He, Nikki, and Sansho confront Goku together. Ginger’s personal development during the film is minimal, as he is a static antagonist, but his arc concludes with his defeat at Goku's hands. After a protracted battle, Goku knocks Ginger off a balcony. As Ginger falls, he fires a desperate energy blast at Goku, but Goku counters with his iconic Kamehameha wave. The Kamehameha overpowers Ginger's attack and sends him hurtling into a nearby tower where Nikki had already crashed, the resulting explosion killing them both and burying them in rubble.
Ginger possesses a range of notable abilities common to powerful warriors in the Dragon Ball universe, including flight and the ability to fire energy blasts. One of his signature techniques is the Kiai, an invisible wave of ki fired from his palm. He also has a fully-powered energy wave attack called the Shogayaki Buster. He and his partners can also perform a spinning combination attack where they fly in a vortex around an opponent before slamming them into the ground. His most unique and distinctive ability is called Katana Kogeki, where he can physically pull a pair of scimitar-like sword appendages directly out of his own arms to use as weapons in close combat. Furthermore, Ginger has the power to transform his body. By shouting a battle cry, which in the English dubs is "Gingerbread!", he can increase his size and muscle mass exponentially, becoming a larger, more powerful version of himself to overwhelm his foes.
