Description
Goemon Ishikawa XIII is the thirteenth generation descendant of the legendary outlaw samurai Ishikawa Goemon, a figure from the Sengoku period. He is a master swordsman who carries a sword known as the Zantetsuken, which translates to iron-cutting sword, a blade of incredible sharpness said to be forged from a meteorite and capable of slicing through almost any substance, including steel, stone, automobiles, and even flying bullets.
Despite his deadly abilities, Goemon is defined by a quiet and stoic personality. He is a man of few words, often appearing aloof or lost in meditation, remaining unflappable even in dangerous situations. He possesses an extreme sense of pride in his martial prowess and feels deep shame and remorse when he fails at a task or when his sword is broken or lost. He reacts to his frequent use of the Zantetsuken on inanimate objects with a catchphrase expressing his frustration: once again, I have cut a worthless object. He prefers to incapacitate opponents rather than kill them, typically by slicing their weapons and clothes.
Goemon holds a deep and strict allegiance to Japanese culture. He dresses in a traditional hakama, wears his hair long, and refuses to eat anything other than Japanese cuisine, preferring to fast rather than consume Western food. He is a practitioner of Buddhism and Shinto, and his drink of choice is sake. In the film, he joins master thief Arsene Lupin III and his partner Daisuke Jigen on their investigation of the counterfeit Gothic bills originating from the Duchy of Cagliostro, becoming a key part of the team that works to uncover the Count's secrets and rescue the princess Clarisse.
Within the group, Goemon maintains a complex relationship with Lupin. While he has developed a true loyalty to him and readily assists in serious situations, he is easily annoyed by Lupin's womanizing and foolish antics. His relationship with Jigen is more amicable and professional, viewing him as a fellow honorable warrior and trustworthy partner in the field. He is also a master of Iaido, the art of drawing the sword, as well as other martial arts such as Kenjutsu, Karate, and Jujutsu, and is a skilled pilot of helicopters and other vehicles. A notable limitation of the Zantetsuken is that it cannot cut konnyaku, a type of yam-based jelly, due to its slippery and adhesive texture.
