Description
Rally Vincent, whose full name is Irene Vincent but who operates under the deliberately gender-neutral alias Rally, is the central character of Gunsmith Cats. Born in London to an English mother and an Indian American father, she has dark blue eyes, dusky skin, and dark hair. Her father was an Olympic-level marksman who taught her about firearms while running a gun shop called Gunsmith Cat in Chicago. Her mother, who disliked guns and wanted her daughter to become a violinist, was murdered by robbers at the store while attempting to file divorce papers on her husband. After her father disappeared while searching for his wife's killers, Rally took over the shop, recruited Minnie May Hopkins as her assistant, and renamed the business Gunsmith Cats once May became her partner. Although Rally is nineteen years old, her official records state that she is twenty-one, the legal age required to operate a gun shop in Chicago.
As a person, Rally is reserved and somewhat guarded around men, and she is most at ease when discussing firearms. She has a strong personal moral code, and although she does not always respect the letter of the law, she has a clear sense of right and wrong and is reluctant to kill unless absolutely necessary. She is also highly skilled in hand-to-hand combat, possesses great speed and physical agility, and is an expert though sometimes reckless driver. Her practical choice of alias reflects her no-nonsense approach to her profession, since the name Rally hides her gender and unsettles her clients.
Rally's motivations are rooted in her family history. She entered the bounty hunting profession partly to gain easier access to both sides of the law while searching for her father, who vanished under mysterious circumstances when she was young. Her love of guns and fast cars came from her father, and she channels that passion into her work as a master gunsmith and bounty hunter. Her bounty hunting brings her into frequent conflict with dangerous criminals, notably Gray, a gang leader whose use of heavy armaments likens him to a terrorist, and Goldie Musou, a Mafia figure who uses drugs to manipulate people. The illegal-goods courier Bean Bandit appears as both an occasional ally and an enemy, depending on the behavior of his clients.

By the end of the story, as her colleagues move on to calmer lives, Rally retires from Chicago's underworld and the bounty hunting scene, though she continues to maintain and sharpen her marksmanship.
