Description
Ai Hayakawa is one of the two main protagonists of the anime, a twelve-year-old girl who, along with her twin brother Yu, ventures into the mysterious parallel dimension known as Wonderland. The twins reside on the island of Sadoshima in Japan, where their parents, geologists Joe and Mary Hayakawa, disappeared after traveling to Wonderland for a second research trip. When their parents failed to return, Ai was the one who suggested they go to Wonderland to search for them, ultimately convincing her more cautious brother to agree.

In terms of personality, Ai is characterized as energetic, intensely curious, and very outgoing, often displaying a positive attitude. However, she is also distinctly more feisty, brash, and practical than her brother. She has a very short temper and can fly into a blind rage over small annoyances, particularly when faced with the bizarre or mischievous behavior of Wonderland's creatures. This hot-blooded nature is balanced by a strong sense of determination, as she believes there is no time to be scared when her parents are missing. Despite her young age, she often takes charge of situations, even in the presence of older individuals like their protector, Lisa. Initially, Ai is very untrusting, treating nearly every new ally with hostility, but she does tend to warm up to people relatively quickly.

Ai's primary motivation for the entire journey is straightforward: to find her missing parents. She is the driving force behind the quest, pushing forward even when challenges arise. Her role in the story is central, as her and Yu's presence in Wonderland is the catalyst for the events of the series. The narrative reveals that she and Yu are far more important than they initially seem, as they are later revealed to be fragments of Chaos who were found as babies by the Hayakawas, rather than their biological children.

Throughout her journey, Ai forms several key relationships. Her primary bond is with her twin brother, Yu, with whom she is constantly contrasted; she is the fiery and impulsive redhead to his more thoughtful and calm demeanor. She is initially suspicious of Lisa Pacifist, a woman who joins them on the subway, but the two quickly befriend each other and Ai accepts Lisa as a protector. She also has a noted odd friendship with the powerful swordsman Makenshi, which is unusual given her hot-blooded personality. During her travels, she encounters a boy named Clear, who embodies the soul of Omega, and develops a crush on him. She becomes very possessive of a single glove he gave her to help keep his powers in check. Another constant companion is Poshepocket, a small, sharp-toothed, mischievous creature that functions as a living handbag and was given to her by a woman named Fabula. Ai finds Poshepocket "scarily cute" and the creature often uses its hammer space abilities to store items or devour large amounts of food.

Ai undergoes significant character development, particularly when she learns the truth about her origins. Upon discovering that she and Yu are not the biological children of the Hayakawas but are instead a part of Chaos, she experiences a deep emotional breakdown, or Heroic BSoD. However, she does not succumb to this fate. In later story material, she actively fights against the attempts of the villain Oscha to make her surrender to her nature as a being of Chaos, embodying a "Screw Destiny" attitude.

In terms of notable abilities, Ai does not possess traditional combat magic or physical prowess. Instead, her primary unique ability is her connection to Kaze's Magun, a powerful summoning gun. The Magun only activates according to her will, or that of her brother Yu, making her a key to unleashing its formidable power. She also commands Poshepocket, whose primary ability is to act as a portal to a hammerspace dimension. This allows the creature to swallow and retrieve objects, most notably storing the special Soil cartridges needed to fire the Magun. Beyond these specific powers, her practical thinking, bravery, and sheer force of will are what allow the group to continue their journey through the dangers of Wonderland.
