Description
Bouquet is a major character who appears exclusively in the anime adaptation of Blue Dragon, playing a particularly active role in the second story arc, Blue Dragon: Trials of the Seven Shadows. She is a young girl who first encountered the hero Shu while working as a waitress. After he defended her from troublesome customers, she lost her job but promptly decided to join his group of travelers, quickly developing a strong romantic attachment to him and declaring herself to be his girlfriend or fiancée.

In terms of background, Bouquet belongs to the Ra clan, a heritage that grants her a unique set of abilities. Her most notable innate power is the ability to become invisible. This skill comes with a significant and often humorous limitation: only her body vanishes, while her clothes do not. To effectively use this power for stealth, she must first undress. This aspect is frequently used for comedic effect and is often toned down or altered in international dubs of the series.

Bouquet’s personality is bright, forward, and persistent. Two years after the initial defeat of the ancient evil Nene, she has remained at Shu’s side, actively fighting alongside him as part of a resistance group against the forces of General Logi. Her infatuation with Shu remains a core part of her character; she unabashedly competes for his attention, often using her charm and occasionally her appearance to get a reaction from him. Despite being clumsy and somewhat distracted at times, she is also genuinely kind, sensitive, and perceptive of the feelings of those around her. She deeply fears being useless or a burden to her friends, which drives her to contribute as much as she can to the group’s efforts. Her personality creates a lighthearted rivalry with Kluke, another member of the group who also has feelings for Shu, though this rivalry softens over time as they become closer friends.

Her primary motivation in Trials of the Seven Shadows stems from her loyalty to Shu and her desire to protect the world they helped save. She actively participates in the resistance against General Logi’s invading army and, alongside Shu, investigates the arrival of a mysterious child named Noi, who crashes to earth in a dragon-like vessel. When new, powerful beings known as Investiture Beings appear to test humanity, Bouquet’s role becomes crucial in the ensuing battles. One of her deepest personal wishes is simply to be helpful and to have a clear purpose, which she finds in supporting her friends. When asked by an adversary what she would wish for if she had great power, she replies that she already has everything she wants, revealing a deep sense of contentment with her life and companions.

Regarding her role in the story, Bouquet is a core member of the protagonist’s party. She provides essential support in combat through her evolving shadow powers. Early in the Trials of the Seven Shadows, she and the others have lost their shadow abilities. However, the mysterious boy Noi uses his power to reawaken her shadow, the Hippopotamus. From this point, her abilities grow significantly. Her shadow, which she affectionately calls Hippo, has the innate capability to merge with her body, allowing them to shapeshift into any person, animal, or object they have seen. Later, she gains the power of mimicry, which lets her copy enemy attacks that hit her transformed state.

The most significant development to her abilities comes from Noi’s power. In Trials of the Seven Shadows, Bouquet gains the ability to use her shadow as a catalyst for a powerful fusion technique. She can transform into a pink, spherical orb that, when grabbed by an ally, merges with their shadow. This fusion grants the ally’s shadow a formidable suit of armor and a massive boost in power. She most frequently merges with Shu’s Blue Dragon, giving it an armored form equipped with a sword capable of firing energy projectiles. She also demonstrates the ability to merge with Marumaro’s Saber Tiger, showcasing her tactical flexibility in battle.

Bouquet’s key relationships are central to her character. Her connection with Shu is the most prominent, as she constantly tries to win his affection and he, while often exasperated, grows more accustomed to her presence and comes to rely on her. Her relationship with Kluke evolves from a rivalry in love to a more cooperative and friendly bond built on mutual respect as fellow warriors. She is frequently the target of Marumaro’s perverted advances, which she dislikes, but she tolerates him as a friend and comrade. She also forms a significant bond with the young Noi, whose mysterious powers are directly responsible for reawakening her shadow and enhancing her abilities, making him a key figure in her personal development.

In terms of development, Bouquet matures between the first series and Trials of the Seven Shadows. While still cheerful and lovesick, she is portrayed as more reliable and integrated into the serious fight against tyranny. She moves from being a tag-along newcomer to a seasoned resistance fighter and a trusted partner to Shu, her skills on the battlefield becoming more crucial than ever. Her identity is firmly established not just as Shu’s self-proclaimed fiancée, but as a capable shadow wielder in her own right.
