Description
Tatsuma Sakamoto hails from a wealthy merchant family in Tosa Province. Though pacifistic, he joined the Joui War in its final years, supplying weapons and provisions to the samurai resistance. He fought alongside Sakata Gintoki, Katsura Kotarou, and Takasugi Shinsuke as one of the four prominent Joui warriors. A battlefield incident where he attempted to carry an injured enemy to safety resulted in a severe injury to his right arm. This injury permanently impaired his sword-wielding ability, forcing his removal from front-line combat.
After recovering and the war's end, Sakamoto pursued his childhood dream of space travel, founding the interstellar trading company Kaientai. Kaientai originated after Sakamoto was thrown into the ocean, enslaved by the pirate group Chidori. He aided Mutsu, the Chidori's vice-captain, in overthrowing their corrupt supervisors. Together, they freed enslaved crew members and repurposed the pirate fleet into Kaientai, with Sakamoto as leader and Mutsu as his second-in-command.
Sakamoto displays an overwhelmingly optimistic and lighthearted personality, often laughing inappropriately and dismissing dangerous situations. This behavior, coupled with frequent misunderstandings and forgetfulness, leads others to call him a "natural idiot." However, beneath this lies strategic intelligence and shrewd negotiation skills. He successfully convinced the entire Renho Tribe to ally with him against their leader, Dark Vader, despite initially misreading the latter's hostile intent. His business practices prioritize mutual profit as a path to peace, though his methods sometimes involve ethically questionable tactics like "50 million yen bags," earning him a reputation as a "con man."
He maintains complex relationships with former comrades. He persistently misnames Gintoki as "Kintoki," provoking irritation and physical retaliation, yet deeply trusts and admires him. Gintoki encouraged Sakamoto's spacefaring dreams and later saved him from self-sacrifice during a mission involving a giant sand bug. Sakamoto also gifted Elizabeth to Katsura, demonstrating their enduring connection. His partnership with Mutsu is foundational to Kaientai; he values her loyalty, once declaring he would never surrender her to those who "do not know the value of a stone," emphasizing his belief that even overlooked individuals possess inherent worth.
Physically, Sakamoto has brown curly hair, blue eyes often hidden behind round sunglasses, and a scar running from his right palm to his forearm. He typically wears a dark red coat, a white scarf, tabi-less geta, and khaki pants. Following his sword injury, he switched to using a pistol as his primary weapon, demonstrating considerable skill. He exhibits leadership qualities, willing to sacrifice himself for others, as seen when he ordered Mutsu to fire cannon at a sand bug engulfing him to save passengers. Ironically, despite his love for spaceships, he suffers extreme motion sickness, frequently vomiting during space travel.
His core philosophy revolves around peace through commerce and human connection over territory. He states: "Planets are just places where people stand. Planets are just rocks. It takes people to make a world. You can have as many 'Earths' as you want. I only care about what's inside." This reflects his belief that communities and relationships, symbolized by the "steel full of old scars," hold greater value than physical land or conquest.
