Description
Kaï Miyagusuku is a central character in the anime Blood+. He is the adopted son of George Miyagusuku and the adoptive older brother of both Riku and the series protagonist, Saya. At the beginning of the story, Kaï is a seventeen-year-old student living in Okinawa, where he was once a popular and talented star athlete on his school's baseball team. After sustaining an arm injury that forced him to quit the sport, he became more prone to getting into street fights, projecting a tough and somewhat aimless exterior. However, this rebellious front conceals a deeply caring nature and a fierce, sometimes impulsive, desire to protect his family.

Kaï's personality evolves significantly throughout the narrative. Initially, he is portrayed as immature, hot-headed, and prone to acting on emotion without fully considering the consequences. His world is upended following the death of his adoptive father, an event that forces him to mature rapidly as he tries to keep his remaining family together. He becomes fiercely overprotective of both Saya and Riku, a trait that is both his greatest strength and a source of internal conflict. When he learns the truth about Saya's identity as a Chiropteran, he struggles to reconcile the monstrous aspects of her nature with the sister he loves, feeling a sense of betrayal and fear. Despite this, his fundamental desire to protect his family ultimately wins out, and he dedicates himself to supporting her, often acting as her emotional anchor and reminding her of her humanity.

Within the story, Kaï serves as a key emotional and motivational anchor for Saya. He is not a supernatural warrior; rather, his role is to represent the human cost of the conflict and the value of the ordinary life Saya fights to protect. His presence often helps to pull Saya back from the brink of losing control to her violent, berserker instincts, with his voice alone capable of restoring her sanity. His motivations are deeply personal and family-oriented. After the tragic death of his younger brother Riku at the hands of Diva, his goal becomes singular: to help Saya end the centuries-long war so they can return to Okinawa and rebuild their lives together. This loss hardens him, and he transforms from a reactive teenager into a proactive and disciplined fighter.

Kaï's key relationships define his character arc. His bond with Saya is the most significant; he sees her as his little sister, and his unwavering faith in her provides her with the strength to continue fighting. While there are hints of deeper, more romantic feelings for Saya, he ultimately sets them aside, understanding her unique bond with Hagi. His relationship with his brother Riku is one of close, protective camaraderie, and Riku's death is the catalyst for his final maturation. He initially distrusts the quiet and mysterious Hagi, viewing him with jealousy over his connection to Saya, but eventually comes to respect him as a comrade. Within the Red Shield organization, he develops a complex relationship with the agent David, taking on many of David's responsibilities when the older man is incapacitated by grief and alcohol, demonstrating his growth into a reliable leader.

Kaï's development is one of the most pronounced in the series. He starts as a selfish and impulsive boy but is forged into a resilient and determined young man by tragedy. The death of his father forces him to become the head of the family; the death of his brother forces him to become a soldier. By the end of the conflict, he has become a key operative for Red Shield, hunting Chiropterans with skill and purpose. His compassion also extends to former enemies, as he is the one who pleads for the lives of Diva's infant daughters, convincing Saya to spare them. He ultimately returns to Okinawa to reopen his father's restaurant and, honoring his promise to Saya, raises Diva's children as his own, frequently bringing them to visit the crypt where Saya sleeps during her thirty-year hibernation.

In terms of abilities, Kaï is entirely human and possesses no supernatural powers. His primary assets are his athleticism and his indomitable will. His background as a star baseball player gives him excellent physical conditioning and hand-eye coordination. Early in the series, he is skilled in brawling and street fighting, often using a baseball bat as an improvised weapon. As the series progresses, he becomes a proficient marksman. He inherits his father's M1911 pistol, which he uses as his main weapon, eventually becoming skilled enough to fire explosive igniter rounds that can harm Chiropterans. His true ability, however, lies in his courage and his capacity to endure tragedy and keep fighting, serving as the emotional core and the persistent human heart of the group.
