Mikan Sakura is the ten-year-old female protagonist of Gakuen Alice. She originally lived in the countryside with her grandfather and her best friend, Hotaru Imai, until Hotaru transferred to a special academy. After hearing unsettling rumors that students at that academy were treated like slaves, Mikan set off on her own to follow Hotaru, leading to her own enrollment at Alice Academy. She is characterized by an optimistic, energetic, and good-natured disposition, though her clumsiness often lands her in trouble. Despite her cheerful and athletic nature, she can be impulsive and tends to act before thinking, yet she possesses a strong will and a motto of never giving up. Her primary motivation is her fierce loyalty to her friends, especially Hotaru, which drives her to uncover the secrets of the academy and confront its injustices.

Within the story, Mikan serves as the central figure whose arrival at the academy triggers the main plot. She initially befriends classmates such as Natsume Hyuga, Ruka Nogi, and others, though her early relationship with Natsume is marked by hostility that gradually evolves into deep romantic love. Her bond with Hotaru remains the emotional core, with Hotaru often acting as a calm counterbalance to Mikan’s exuberance. Other key relationships include her mentor-like connection with teacher Narumi-sensei and her eventual reconciliation with her biological mother. Over the course of the series, Mikan matures from a carefree country girl into a determined student who learns to control her unique abilities and faces the dark truths behind the academy’s administration. A significant turning point occurs when she learns of the atrocities committed by the Elementary School Principal and resolves to defeat him. After peace is restored, her memories are erased and she is expelled, but she later regains them, returns to the academy, and eventually marries Natsume.

Mikan possesses three rare and powerful Alices. Her primary ability is the Nullification Alice, which negates the powers of other Alices within close proximity. She also inherits the Stealing Alice from her mother, allowing her to steal and crystallize others’ Alices into colored stones. Later, she develops the Inserting Alice, which enables her to implant stolen Alices into other objects or people. Throughout the story, she learns to refine these abilities, making her a key asset in conflicts involving other Alice users. Her growth is reflected not only in her skill but also in her deepening understanding of herself and the world around her.
