TV-Series
Description
Natsume Hyuuga is the male protagonist of Gakuen Alice. He is a student at Alice Academy, a school for children with special powers called Alices. Natsume possesses the Fire Alice, an exceptionally powerful ability that allows him to generate and control fire. This power runs in his family, but it comes at a severe cost: frequent use places great strain on his body and progressively shortens his lifespan. Throughout the story, he is shown coughing blood or losing consciousness due to the toll his ability takes on him.
Natsume’s background is marked by tragedy. A rumor spread that he had set a village on fire, leading to his enrollment at the Academy. In truth, his younger sister Aoi lost control of her own Fire Alice and accidentally caused the blaze, losing her memories, her sight, and her abilities as a result. Natsume falsely confessed to protect her, and the Academy used Aoi as a hostage to ensure his cooperation. Even after Aoi was released, Natsume continued to carry out dangerous, secret missions for the Academy in order to keep his friends Mikan Sakura and Ruka Nogi safe.
In terms of personality, Natsume initially comes across as cold, aloof, and hostile. He is feared by many students because of the destructive nature of his Alice and his standoffish attitude. He is also frequently bullied, though he tends to ignore it. Despite his behavior, he is extremely intelligent—nearly a genius—and often skips classes. He harbors deep resentment and distrust toward the adult authorities at the Academy, believing they exploit their power to harm the younger students. He is thoroughly unhappy with the school and its oppressive system.
Natsume’s motivations are driven primarily by a desire to protect those he cares about. He feels a strong sense of responsibility for his sister and later extends this protectiveness to Mikan and Ruka. His early resistance to forming bonds gradually gives way as he is paired with Mikan as a class partner by their teacher Narumi. Initially rebelling against the arrangement, Natsume eventually begins to enjoy Mikan’s company and the companionship of his classmates. This marks the start of his emotional growth, though he never fully loses his dangerous edge or short temper.
His role in the story is that of a central male lead and love interest. He starts as a rival and antagonist to Mikan but evolves into her partner and eventual husband. Their relationship develops slowly, punctuated by moments of jealousy on Natsume’s part—he often reacts physically when other males get too close to Mikan, such as kicking their shins or burning the tips of her hair. A key turning point occurs during a Christmas party when he kisses her. Later, he searches relentlessly for Mikan after she is taken by the Academy, eventually securing a confession of love from her and reciprocating. In the epilogue, they marry and live happily together.
Natsume’s key relationships include his best friend Ruka Nogi, the only person who initially understood his reasons for being at the Academy and who came to the school specifically for Natsume’s sake. Ruka provides emotional support and companionship. His bond with Mikan is the emotional core of the series, driving his character development from isolation and bitterness to warmth and genuine affection. His relationship with his sister Aoi, though she is not always present, underpins his deepest motivations and sacrifices.
Throughout the series, Natsume undergoes significant development. He moves from a solitary, suspicious child who keeps everyone at arm’s length to a young man who values his friendships and is willing to risk his life for others. His use of his Fire Alice, despite its life-threatening consequences, becomes an expression of his resolve to protect those he loves. His journey illustrates themes of sacrifice, the burden of power, and the redemptive power of human connection.
Notable abilities beyond his Fire Alice include his sharp intellect, strategic thinking, and a strong will that allows him to push through physical pain. He is also the only Special Star in the Elementary Division, a status that grants him privileges he rarely uses. Despite his talents, Natsume remains a deeply complex figure, shaped by past trauma and driven by a fierce loyalty that gradually softens his exterior.
