Description
Quin is a supporting character in the anime Death Parade. She works in the Information Bureau, the administrative division of the afterlife that handles the memories of the deceased. Her main responsibilities are transmitting those memories to the arbiters who conduct judgments and testing the abilities of the arbiters themselves. Before taking this administrative position, Quin served as the arbiter of Quindecim, the bar on the fifteenth floor of the tower, and she held that role until Decim was appointed to replace her. She is therefore Decim's predecessor.
In appearance, Quin is a pale-skinned woman of average height with short dark brown hair and bangs that nearly cover her forehead. Her visible eye is light green, while her right eye is covered by a yellow eye patch secured with a brown strap. The patch contains a lens device that she uses to analyze and review the memories of the deceased, making it essential to her work. Her clothing reflects her behind-the-scenes role: she wears a white lab coat over a gray hoodie, a long pale blue skirt, and beige flat shoes, with her staff emblem pinned to the left side of her lab coat collar.
Quin has a lively, talkative, and laid-back personality, often described as a chatterbox, which sets her apart from the more stoic arbiters and workers around her. She is friendly and sociable, and she has a strong fondness for alcohol, particularly sake and spirits from the world of the living; her enthusiasm for drinking is one of her defining traits. Beneath her cheerful exterior, however, she shows signs of dissatisfaction with her current role. She finds the work in the Information Bureau endless and fast-paced, and she misses the direct personal interaction she enjoyed while serving as an arbiter. This suggests a lingering attachment to her former position and some regret about the more bureaucratic nature of her current duties.
Her motivations center on carrying out her duties competently within the judgment system while maintaining her personal relationships. She is loyal to her superiors and friends, especially Nona, and she is willing to assist with difficult or unconventional tasks, such as locating, sending, and recompiling specific memories. She also cares about the well-being of the arbiters she once worked alongside, particularly Decim, and she is attentive to the political tensions within the afterlife hierarchy. Her warning to Nona about being cautious around Oculus shows that she is aware of the risks surrounding Decim's growing emotional capacity.
In the story, Quin operates largely behind the scenes. The memories she transmits are crucial to the judgment process, because they give arbiters the information they need to evaluate the lives of the deceased. She is also connected to a hidden evaluation called the Memory Test, which is designed to observe how arbiters handle misleading information; it is revealed that Decim failed this test when his attention was diverted by a decoy guest. Quin's backstory is presented through a flashback recounted by Decim. During her final judgment at Quindecim, Nona simultaneously tested Decim and the arbiter Ginti by having them observe the proceedings and use the judgment devices. Quin then eagerly handed her position to Decim, along with the bar's supply of alcohol, and celebrated the transition with him. She was impressed by his martini-making skills and surprised but optimistic about his growing respect for humans. Before leaving, she advised him to find something he treasures, encouraging him to develop an emotional grounding.
Quin's key relationships are with Nona, Decim, and Castra. Her bond with Nona is the closest and is marked by warmth, trust, and camaraderie. She spends leisure time with Nona, drinks with her, confides in her about her dissatisfaction with her job, and accepts gifts such as bottles of whiskey from the living world in exchange for helping with complicated memory work. With Decim, she is respectful and admiring; she regards him as a worthy successor, praises his abilities, expresses pride in his growing empathy for humans, and offers him guidance. With Castra, another administrator, she shares a cordial and professional rapport, and the two are often seen together during meetings with Nona.
Quin shows development as the series progresses. She initially appears as a cheerful figure who has settled into her administrative position, but it becomes clear that the workload is taking a toll on her and that she regrets losing the personal engagement she had as an arbiter. She becomes more involved in the concerns surrounding Decim's emotional growth. When Nona worries about Decim's uncertainty in judgment, Quin helps counsel her, and she later assists with the unusual request to send and recompile the memories of Chiyuki for Decim. In the final part of the story, she joins Nona and Castra and voices concern about the possibility that Oculus will discover Decim's emotional development, before Nona instructs them to let events unfold as they are. Throughout the series, Quin demonstrates an ability to adjust her demeanor to fit the situation; despite her normally upbeat and casual manner, she appears solemn and composed when the gravity of an official occasion requires it.
Quin's notable abilities are tied to her work with memories. She can transmit the memories of the dead to arbiters through telepathic communication, allowing them to judge the lives of the deceased. She can analyze and review memories using the lens device in her eye patch, and she can test the abilities of arbiters. She is also able to locate and recompile specific memories when a task requires it, as demonstrated when she sends and recompiles Chiyuki's memories at Nona's request. Her position within the system is unusual: she is the only known arbiter to be exempt from the rule stating that arbiters cannot stop making judgments, having retired from judging to work in the Information Bureau. This exception suggests that her experience or her connection to Nona set her apart within the afterlife's structure.
